Whenever we travel to Alor Setar, we always try to take their ginger fried fish which is exceptional.
The owner's brother shop is Restoran Chai Bee, next to Hong Leong Finance, on Jalan Putra.

Penang is a heaven for food and just can't find enough time to try all when we are there.

 

Assam Laksa at Ayer Hitam.
This stall's assam laksa is probably the most well known in Malaysia. Just excellent.

Cheang Kee, Nibong Tebal.
This restaurant is well known for their unique crab porridge. The crab porridge cost RM8/bowl for a person, come with one crab, sweet stock and is excellent. Another dish that shouldn't be missed is the pandan leaf chicken, which fragrant is the best that we had so far. Their fried clam with bean sauce is also unique and good. Other dish that we have tried are boiled octopus and steamed fishhead. which are good too.

Ee Beng Vegetarian Food
One of the best and most value for money self-serving vegetarian foods around. We have visited this coffee shop a few times and they always live up to our expectation.

Kham Khee Restaurant
This family run restaurant is popular with their beef steamed boat. In addition, they also serve seafood and tomyam steamed boat.

Midland Court Restaurant.
One of the good cantonese restaurant in Penang. We went there for lunch; we ordered steamed fish, fried brocolli with salted fish, pork knuckle with thai sauce, and fried prawn with salad dressing which are excellent.

Tambun (Prawn Village) Restaurant.
This restaurant is constructed by the estuary serving live seafoods and is one of the most popular in Bkt Tambun. We have tried their steamed goby fish, fried prawn, fried mantis prawn, steamed mantis prawn, steamed crabs, baked crabs, steamed prawns, fresh olysters and shell fish, and we find them better than its neighbours.

Kedai Kopi Kek Seng.
This coffee shop is well known for their ABC with ice cream. Hokkien mee, char kway teow and kway teow soup at this place is typical Penang and is good.

This stall fried kway teow has over 20 years history.

This restaurant has been the most popular local restaurant for more than ten years. Their foods is fairly consistent and good.

Ice kacang At Lorong Swatow.
This stall is the pioneer of Penang style ice kacang. The shaved ice is fine with optional fruits.

Kee Heng Restaurant, Nibong Tebal.
This popular restaurant was located in Parit Buntar; dued to break up of partnerships, one of the partner moved here. We savoured their curry prawn cooked with mints, house special taufu, steamed frog legs with garlic, steamed fish, udon fried with black pepper, boiled octopus, crab porridge and a veg for lunch. We find the food excellent and price is value for money.

This coffee shop is popular with their noodle with roast pork.

A popular place for toruists and to entertain client. The setting is posh and have live band and mini cultural show in the evening.

Restorn KH (Kim Hee), Seberang Jaya.
A cantonese restaurant; we find their fried fish with hot chilli paste, fried osrich with black pepper sauce and braised celery with sea cucumber not bad.

A restaurant with a posh decor but food is average.

Restorn Choon Hiang.
Another seafood restaurant in Bukit Tambun, this is the last of the restaurant at the end of the road. We tried their steamed goby fish, fried mantis prawns, shell fish, clan, fried frog legs with ginger and noodle for dinner.

Mega Seafood Restaurant.
This restaurant is located at Megamall Pinang. We had steamed cod fish, fried venison with ginger, special beancurb and brocolli for lunch. We regret to find their cod fish not fresh.

Seafood in Bukit Tambun
A popular place to have seafood. All restaurants in this area serve live fish at low price e.g. Siakap (about 500g) at RM15, goby at RM55/kg, etc. However, not all the restaurants taste the same and we invite comments from readers in Penang.

Restoran Tuck Kee.
Their braised hor fun, fried hor fun (dried type), braised chicken feet and oiled bean sproud is very good. Once we had dinner there two days in a row.

Kedai Kopi Kong Heng, Ipoh.
Whenever we travel north in the morning, we try to stop at this coffee shop for the great Ipoh food. We have known this place since early 1970's. There are over 6 stalls serving Ipoh specialities. We love their Ipoh hor fun, bean sproud and popia.

Kedai Kopi Thean Chun, Ipoh.
This coffee shop is adjacent to Kong Heng is another great place for Ipoh food. Their Ipoh hor fun is the best in town and chee cheong fun is excellent.

Wong Koh Kee Restaurant, Ipoh.
This non-aircond restaurant serves excellent braised fish head, steamed eggs, fried watercress, double boiled soup, etc at very cheap price.

Restoran Wong (Tauge Ayam).
The 'Original' Ipoh bean sprout chicken. They can sell over 100 chickens a night, their record is 200 chickens a night. We find they serve a better hor fun than their neighbours. They used to start business at 9pm. Lately, due to competition from across the road, they now start at 6:30pm. To prevent overcharging non-locals, a whole chicken is RM16.

Restoran Onn Kee (Tauge Ayam).
The second most popular place for bean sprout chicken, and is the preferred place for bean sprout chicken by the locals. We prefered their chicken than the one across the road.

Sticky Rice.
This stall serves an excellent sticky rice with soy duck.

Seafood in Sitiawan.
There are about 10 seafood restaurants. The seafood is fresh, cheap and excellent. We like 'Ah Pek Lee Kou Hock'; their fried olyster with egg, fried sea snail kong pou style are excellent.

Sin Hup Yik Seafood Restaurant, Lenggong.
This restaurant and its neigbour are popular with its large variety of fresh water fish. A recommended stop over if enroute to north.

F.M.S. Bar & Restaurant, Ipoh.
This restaurant is housed in the historical F.M.S. building with antique decor. We tried their shechuan prawns, fried minced pork with salted fish, belacan kangkong, taufoo, etc and find the food not bad and prices is reasonable.

This coffee shop is opposite to Kong Heng and is known for their frothed 'Pah Kopi' (White Coffee).

This restaurant is known for its fresh water fish and fresh water prawn. We ordered steamed goby fish, steamed fresh water prawn, dry fried fresh water prawn, fried pork belly and fried beans. We find the food fresh, good and worth the journey from KL. But a word of warning, tourists are expected to pay more for thier meal especially during holiday season.

We have tried their steamed patin fish, fried chicken with sesame oil and a vegetable. We find the patin fish fresh and excellent, but expensive.

Restoran ABC< mentakab Estate
This middle of nowhere restuarant serving the cross country road between Rompin and Segamat/Kuantan road. Fresh water prawns and fish are plentiful and prices is not expensive.

Restaurant near Mushroom Farm, Genting Highland.
There fried egg plant and mince pork with fresh mushroom is good. But as a tourist; expect to pay more than Genting employee, especially during the holiday season.

Restoran Loon Sing, Nilai.
This restaurant is well known (advertised) for their award winning dishes eg 'Budda jump over the wall', braised pork, etc. They were located at Bukit Beruntung and moved to Nilai in 1999. We tried their 'Budda jump over the wall', prawn meat ball and white rice cake for lunch and find the cooking style innovative.

They serve the best teow chew porridge that we know. Their home cooked assam fish is top of the world.

Their chicken rice is served golf ball size (RM0.15/pc), a traditional Hainanese style and is very good. We can smell their chicken rice before entering the shop.

Neighbour to Chop Hwa. Again their chicken rice is served golf ball size (larger). Their rice is less salty then Chop Chong Hwa but they have more dishes to choose from (e.g. Assam fish, black bean soup, etc).

Restoran Kah Kah Loke, Tmn Johor Jaya.
This restaurant well known for their bitter gourd soup, which cooked with plenty of sliced meat! In addition, we find their fried pork with spring oion and ginger, tau foo and belacan kangkong are good too. Expect large crowd and long waiting time during lunch time.

Hock Swee Hin, Yong Peng.
Yong Peng is a Hock Chew town with a few good restaurants. Whenever, we travel south by road, we tried to stop here for a feast. We love their Hock Chew fried mee, Vegetable with Olyster sauce, Red rice wine Chicken, claypot fish head, etc.

Senibong Village Seafood, Plentong.
This restaurant is located at the seafront facing Singapore with open air seating and have quite a good choice of fresh and live seafoods. During our visit, We tried thier steamed fish (parrot fish, a rare species in KL restaurant), deep fried fish, drunken prawn, fried crabs, seafood pot, etc and we find the food fresh and good.

A popular seafood restaurant with outdoor seating. On our last trip there, we had fried crab with chilli, friend prawns, fried sotong, steamed red garoupa, fried fern with samba and fried olyster with eggs. We find the food good except the fish, which meat is hrad.

A popular seafood restaurant serving live seafood. Live Parrot fish (hai lee or soo mei) is available at less than Rm200/kg; in Kuala Lumpur a live Parrot fish would cost more than Rm600/kg in an exclusive restaurant.
