Ahr
  • Müller Thurgau
  • Portugieser
  • Riesling
  • Spätburgunder,
The Ahr region is a small, northerly region of Germany around the river Ahr, a tributary to the Rhein. It is making mostly Spätburgunder (pinot noir),
Mittelrhein
  • Riesling
  • Müller Thurgau
This is a small, touristy area around the castles along the Rhein, with very few top class Riesling growers,
Prices are low.
Rheingau
  • Riesling
  • Spätburgunder
This is the great Riesling region of Germany, some of the worlds greatest Rieslings are made here by dedicated growers, Since 1994 the Rheingau is the first German region to have a semi official vineyard classification, drawn up by the Charta organisation and the VdP Rheingau. The best sites will be allowed to carry the designation ``Erstes Gewächs" (first growth). The use of this designation is optional, and the wine has to be dry.
Some of the best German wines come from this region Schloss Johannisberg, Schloss Vollrads to name just a couple.
In th UK Rhien wines are often called "Hock" the name is derived from the village of Hochheim, which provided the wine that Queen Victoria used to love.
Nahe
  • Riesling
  • Müller Thurgau
  • Silvaner
Little known and thus often excellent value for money, some of the finest Riesling producers in Germany are from this region. Good dry wines are being made along the Nahe, yet like in the Rheingau it's the sweeter Rieslings that reach the greatest hights. They can compete with the best of those more famous regions.
Rheinhessen
  • Müller Thurgau
  • Silvaner
  • Riesling
  • Scheurebe
  • Kerner
  • Bacchus
Liebfraumilch country, mostly. Yet the northern parts at the banks of the Rhein, the ``Rheinfront'' area around Nierstein and Nackenheim, are in the same league as the best of the Rheingau, at fairer prices. Some superb Riesling growers are located here, making this a source of top class wines.
Rheinpfalz
  • Müller Thurgau
  • Riesling
  • Kerner
  • Portugieser
  • Silvaner
  • Scheurebe
This is the place to get some of the best non-Riesling wines in Germany, as well as plenty of top class Rieslings. Dry whites can be world class and so too can its dessert wines.
Serious red wines are being made too, though not on the same level.
Main
  • Müller Thurgau
  • Spätburgunder
  • Grauburgunder
  • Gutedel
  • Riesling (Klingelberger)
Many dry wines at reasonable prices are made here. The style is more international than in the other regions, reflecting the relatively warm climate. The best wines deserve serious consideration, but they are by no means cheap,
