Nunavut
Canada's Map is changing
At 12:01 on April 1st 1999,
after an interfaith church service, a huge fireworks display
marked the official formation of Nunavut-Canada's 3rd Territory.
For the first time since Newfoundland and Labrador joined
confederation in 1949, the map of Canada has been redrawn.
Stretching north
of the 60th parallel in a vast pie-shaped wedge from the manitoba
border to the tip of Ellesmere Island-almost to the geographic
North Pole-and including Islands in Ungava Bay, Hudson Bay and
James bay, Nunavut is almost one quarter the size of Canada.
Some interesting facts about the territory.
It is larger than any other province or territory.
Nunavut takes in two thirds of Canada's coast-line, and covers three time zones.
Baker lake in southern Nunavut is the geographic centre of Canada. For this reason, the site is known as the belly button of Canada.
Because so few roads exist in nunavut, residents of the territory travel by air plane five times more often than most other canadians.
