History

Below are some facts and documents collected about John Dudek, Eva Katulak, and their families and ancestors.  Some of you probably know all this information already.  To others, you may be seeing this for the first time.  As more information is collected, this page will be redesigned.  If you would like a full copy of any document, please email Sam Dudek at sdudek@yahoo.com. In your request, please indicate the file name of the document you are requesting.

U.S. Census Documents

The 1910 U.S. Census shows Anthony Katulak living in Detroit, Michigan on Hammond Street.  Anthony, who was 40 years old, was living as a boarder in the home of the Kioltyok or Opla family.  His profession is listed as a railroad laborer. (Please note:  This census lists Anthony's immigration date as 1910.  In the next census, this has been changed to 1911.)

By 1920, Anthony, 50, was living in a house on Military Avenue in Detroit with his wife Bronislawa (Bernice), 47, their son John, 21, and their daughters Eva, 18, Helena, 16, Josephine, 15, Victorya, 12, Stefania, 10, and Stella, 7.  Anthony's profession is listed as a laborer in a lumber yard.  John is a conductor for an electric rail company, and Eva is a "bench worker" for a medical laboratory.  All the Katulaks are listed as immigrating to the United States in 1911, although it is possible that Anthony was in the country in 1910.

In Ladd City, Illinois, the 1920 Census lists a 24-year-old John Dudek from Galicia, Poland.  (Please note:  Due to some discrepancies, it cannot be confirmed that this is our John Dudek.  His age on this census is 24, yet in 1930 it is only 32.  Also, this census lists his year of immigration as 1911; the next census says 1913.  However, no 1920 census records have been found with a better match for John Dudek, so this may or may not be our John Dudek.) John was living in Illinois as a boarder in the home of John Rybanzk, also from Galicia.

census1920d

The 1930 Census shows that Bernice, now 56, as a widow still living on Military Avenue in Detroit.  She is living with her children:  Stella, 17, Anna, 9, and Raymond, 2.  In what appears to be a census error, a fourth child is listed as Stella, age 20.  Twenty-year-old "Stella" worked in a music store, while 17-year-old Stella worked in a laundry.  John, Eva, Helena, Josephine, Victorya and Stephania are no longer listed in the household; John, the oldest, would now be 31, Stephania, the youngest, 20.

census1930k

The 1930 Census also lists John and Eva Dudek together for the first time. The Dudeks also live on Military Avenue.  John is listed as 32 years old, Eva is 28.  With them reside their children:  Leonard, 8, Raymond, 5, and Irene, 2.  The Census lists John's profession as driver.
