Four Grapes - For Countries

The Wines

Chalambar Shiraz Seppelt 1995 Australia Victoria 119

Chateau Vieux Rivallon (mainly Merlot) - 1995 France Bordeaux, St Emilion 149

Miscellaneous Notes
First: No one got all grapes and all countries right!

A tasting that clearly demonstrated the differences of the more fruit driven wines of the new world compared to the more reserved wines of the old world.

The Zinfandel was a real crowd pleaser; everyone enjoyed it.

Seppelt's Chalambar was a real fruit bomb but still had enough of tannins to provide a firm backbone.

Torres' Mas la Plana behaved interestingly; at the tasting it was closed up, hardly any nose and the major component on the tounge was harsh acid. No one thought it was an inspiring wine. But since I had to drive, I brought some home (a 20 mile car ride) in a "doggy bag" and something happened to the wine. It went through som kind of metamorphosis and suddenly it was a much more balanced wine. Amazing!

Chateau Vieux Rivallon was OK but it was already getting old (bad storage?) and did really not perform as one would expect from a Bordeaux from 1995.
