Miscellaneous Notes
Champagne - the drink of festive occasions! Once again the object of our ruthless, but fair, scrutiny!

The Delamotte was very fresh and had citrus notes on the nose. This was confirmed on the palate: More citrus, fresh and balanced. Tasted like the kind of Champagne that you are served on airplanes.

The Pongrácz, the only non-Champagne in the tasting, had lots of soft gingerbread on the nose. The taste was full of apple and also very balanced. Nice bubbles. A very good wine and the surprise of the evening - a real "Champagne" from South Africa - and without a Champagne price tag!

The Mailly had a very small nose, sometimes it wasn't there at all. The bubbles were nasty ones and it was out of balance; the acid was overwhelming. Not my favourite wine.

The Paillard was almost golden in its appearance and it had huge notes of fortified wine and oxidised apple cider on the nose. The taste was great though, the mature apples were back accompanied with the taste from newly baked bread. This was a heavy wine, not so much finesse but power to match almost any kind of meal!
