Motto: Montani semper liberi
I have lived in West Virginia most of my life except for 18 months in California. West Virginia is the most beautiful state I have ever seen. It has so much to see and do. The Autumn is especially beautiful when the trees change colors. Just about anything you want to do you can do in West Virginia, like skiing, whitewater rafting, hunting, fishing, boating, bungie jumping, rock climbing, biking, camping, you name it you can do it here. I grew up in the city of Weirton, which is located in the northern panhandle. We are about 30 miles west of Pittsburgh, PA. Weirton is a major steel-producing center. Weirton Steel is the largest employee owned company in the country.
West Virginia became a state on June 20, 1863, as the 35th state. It lies in the very heartland of the Appalachian Highlands, it's mountainous terrain and picturesque scenery have led it to it's nickname the Mountain State. West Virginia is the highest state east of the Mississippi River. Spruce Knob is the highest mountain 4863 ft above sea level. Bordering states are, Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.
Civil War Roots The town of Harpers Ferry may be livelier today than it was in 1859, when abolitionist John Brown staged his raid on the US Arsenal there, setting off a chain of events that resulted in the Civil War. More beautiful than ever, its historic section is maintained as a national historical park and part of the Civil War Discovery Trail. The park is actually a collection of many small museums housed in original buildings. Costumed interpreters guide tours year-round. Along the cobblestone streets winding uphill from the park to the town of Bolivar, shops feature antiques, Civil War memorabilia and crafts. The Harpers Ferry Flea Market, an outdoor bazaar, appears on US 340 on spring, summer and fall weekends. Harpers Ferry offers many choices for outdoor recreation. Stroll to nearby Virginus Island; bike or hike along the C&O Canal towpath or the Appalachian Trail; or enjoy a variety of paddle sports on the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers. George's Brother Charles Town, named for George Washington's brother, exudes 19th-century charm. A pleasant walking tour (and seasonal ghost tours) will take you to many historic sites, including the Jefferson County Courthouse, where John Brown was tried for treason. TheJefferson County Museum displays artifacts from the era, including the wagon that carried Brown to his hanging. Historic bed and breakfast inns are within walking distance, and community theater thrives in the Old Opera House. For fast-paced fun, watch live and simulcast horse racing at the Charles Town Races, now also featuring video slots, or watch the rubber burn at Summit Point Raceway, only a few minutes away.
