Hurricane Floyd and Flood

I chose this background because everyone that is affected by a Disaster,
needs Prayers to be said by each and every one on God's great big Earth,
for each and everyone that has been affected by any type of Disaster,
Whether it is here in the United States or anywhere else in this big World,

September, 1999, the folks along the Eastern Seaboard will never forget
this month and year. This is when Hurricane Floyd decided to go "calling"
on all these nice folks. This "nasty act" of "Mother Nature" affected several
of the eastern states. It's "wrath" was felt from the tip of Florida all the way
up to New York. It affected thousands and thousands of people in these states
and caused millions of dollars in damage to homes, property and animals.
Hurricane Floyd was responsible for the loss of 50 precious lives in North Carolina.

I was activated on September 27th. to respond to this Disaster
I was told to fly into Raleigh, North Carolina and then to report to Headquarters
down in Smithfield, North Carolina. From there they sent me to the kitchen
that was already set up in Wilson, North Carolina at the Wilson Baptist Church.
The Volunteers that were already there were glad to see some more Volunteers
arriving as they had been serving meals on established feeding routes in the
affected area for several days and was getting tired.

I want to take the time here to say that the men and women of the
Baptist Convention are the ones that prepare the food supplied by Red Cross.
The Baptist Group that was doing the cooking for us in Wilson were from Kentucky.
They also deserve a big round of applause for the fantastic job that they do on
these disasters as they go about the daily routine of preparing thousands
of meals each and every day for Red Cross to serve.

I was assigned to the feeding route that covered the Sharpsburg and Elm City area.
I met several very nice people while I was going around in these areas.
After about 5 days of being on this route, the Co-ordinator, "my boss lady"
took me off the route and "field promoted" me to the rank of "ERV Supervisor".
This just means that I was "boss" over 8 of these vehicles which were manned
by 24 Volunteers from all over the United States. It was my job to see that the
crew members and the trucks had what they needed to do their daily routes
and if they had any problems of any kind, they had to report to me

ERV stands for Emergency Response Vehicle which is a mobile feeding vehicle.
National Red Cross has many of these vehicles that are "housed" at many different
Red Cross Chapters all over the United States that are called "Host Chapters.
This means that they keep the vehicles ready to "roll out" at any given time
with supplies and at least 2 Volunteers within 24 hours after being activated

When the Wilson Kitchen closed down, several of us were sent down to the
kitchen in Goldsboro, North Carolina. We were in Goldsboro exactly 2 days
when they "shut us down" due to the threat of another hurricane that was
threatening the east coast. Hurricane Irene was now trying her best to give
the Eastern Seaboard another pounding. We were told to go to our motels
to wait it out and till further notice from Headquarters in Smithfield, North Carolina.
As luck would have it, Hurricane Irene "turned" and went further out into
the Atlantic Ocean without doing any further damage. We were able to go
back to our dailey routines and to our feeding routes. We continued with our
routes from here for 4 more days, then it was also closed down. From here
some of the ERVs and crews were sent down to Florida to assist down there.

I arrived back home on the 23rd. of October. My hubby and I both enjoy
doing different things on the computer. From keeping in contac with family
and friends, doing web pages to playing different games on the internet.
Well, he knows how much I like to play Bingo. He told me about a place that
he had found that had a pretty good bingo game on it. I started playing
at the site and started chatting with the very nice people that were in there.
People usually ask the same question, "Where's everyone from"? and the
varied list starts. They are from all over the United States, Canada and other
various places all around this great big world of ours.

When this one person said that they were from Goldsboro, North Carolina,
I told them that I knew where that was as I had just come home from there.
They asked me what I had been there for, if it had been business or pleasure.
I told them that I had been there with Red Cross for the flooding from
Hurricane Floyd. Well, one thing lead to another and I have become
"Bingo Buddies", not only with these two, but with several others.

I truly hope that these two "Bingo Buddies" don't mind me using their names here,
or the fact that I "snitched" the picture of them from the "bingo site" to use here.
In the bingo chat, they are known as meg1048 and mr_meg aka Marsha & Ed Glinsky

Thank you both for being so nice to someone whom you've never met
face to face. As we say in the bingo chat when someone leaves,
"nite meg, nite mr, tc, God Bless and sweet dreams. :)
I already love you both and will one day get to meet both of you in person.

These pages are dedicated to Marsha & Ed Glinsky, and to all the people of
North Carolina that was affected by the devastation that was caused by
Hurricane Floyd and the flooding as a result of "him".
