The Living Room and Music Room
The living room, with its 15-foot custom white sofa and gracious appointments was far more lived in than its formality suggests. This blue, gold, and white color scheme was typical of these rooms in the late sixties and early seventies. While Elvis changed the colored the color scheme again and again through the years, the key furnishings were constant. The stained glass peacocks, designed by Laukhuff Stained Glass of Memphis were added during a redecorating done by Elvis in 1974, which included putting these original furnishings in storage in favor of a mostly red look. (The blue and white look was brought back when Graceland opened for tours in 1982, and the "red look" went into storage.) Beyond the peacocks is the music room where many a night Elvis and friends sang their favourite tunes. The living room measures a comfortable 17' x 24' and the music room is 14' x 17'.
In the living room Elvis plays one of his guitars for a mid-sisties Memphis newspaper feature about the star at home. (inset left) The portrait of Vernon Presley in the living room was Vernon's Christmas gift to Elvis in 1976, Elvis' last Christmas.
From 1974 on, this beautiful ebony Story & Clark baby grand piano graced the intimate music room. A white baby grand, which Elvis traded in on the purchase of this one, was the longtime favourite. For a brief time, a gold-leafed grand piano occupied this spot.
