HISTORY OF THE LXVR 2880 & 2885

IN THE MID 1960s THE ORIGINAL NORFOLK SOUTHERN RAILWAY LOOKED TO EMD FOR ITS LASTEST MEDIUM-HORSEPOWER MODEL, BEING THE GP38. THE FIRST TWO ARRIVED IN JUNE 1966, THE 2001 (2880) AND THE 2002. THEY WERE AMONG THE FIRST GP38s BUILT.THE SECOND ORDER 2003 & 2004 WERE DELIVERED IN OCTOBER OF 1966. THE THIRD ORDER 2005, 2006 (2885) & THE 2007 WERE DELIVERED IN MID-1967.
ON JANUARY 1, 1973 THE NS WAS MERGED INTO THE SOUTHERN RAILWAY.SOUTHERN HAD THE LOW NOSED HOODS RAISED AND THE CONTROLL STANDS MODIFIED TO THE PRACTICE OF OPERATING LONG HOOD FORWARD. THE NOW SOUTHERN UNITS WERE NUMBERED 2880-2886.
AFTER THE MERGER OF THE SOUTHERN RAILWAY AND THE N&W IN 1982, THE UNITS WERE REPAINTED BUT KEPT THEIR SOUTHERN RAILWAY ROAD NUMBERS.THEY REMAINED IN SERVICE UNTIL 1996, AND THEN WERE RETIRED.
CAGY INDUSTRIES BOUGHT THE 2880 & 2885 IN FEBRUARY OF 1996 FOR THE LXVR.DURING THE CAGY SHOPS BRIEF TEST PERIOD THE 2 UNITS HAD C&G STENCILED ON THE NOSES AND RAN FRIEGHT BETWEEN COLUMBUS AND GREENWOOD BEFORE THE LXVR START UP ON JUNE 1ST 1996.
