About Surabaya



Surabaya has been named the 'City of Heroes' in memory of those who lost their lives trying to repel the British invason in 1945, shortly after indonesia's Proclamation of Independence. The 'Battle of Surabaya' began on 10th November and resulted in heavy casualties. Surabaya city , capital of East Java prov., NE Java, Indonesia, on the Kali Mas R. Surabaya is the country's second largest city and its major naval base. A commercial and industrial center, it has railroad shops, automobile assembly and oil processing plants, and manufactures textiles, glass, and fertilizer. Its well stocked zoological garden include several species of Indonesian fauna like "orang utan", komodo dragon and a collection of nocturnal animals. Kalimas is an old traditional harbor for the world famous Bugis schooner "pinisi" which sailed the Indonesian seas for hundreds of years. At present those praus can still be seen in their former glory with big colorful sails. Across the Strait Madura, half an hour by ferry from Surabaya is the island of Madura, famous for its unique bull races held each year after the harvest season.
