Welcome to the Shimer Family Webring Newsletter!

January 23rd, 2000

Well, I finally made it back to the good 'ol US of A! I left Germany in November and took 40 days of PCS (Permanent Change of Station) leave back in Florida. It was a great time to be home. First, it was snowing like crazy the day I left Baumholder. Didn't know if I'd even make it to Frankfurt for my flight out! But then when I landed in Orlando and it was 70 degrees and humid; I knew I was back home.

So, as you can imagine, I didn't have time during my leave to work on any of the genealogy. First Thanksgiving and then Christmas (both were fantastic, always good to be home during the holidays), and then we packed up the mini-van with a U-haul in tow and drove 3 days and 1,800 miles across country to were I'm writing you from now: El Paso, Texas.

I will be stationed here at Ft. Bliss for at least the next two years. We've had a heck of a time getting settled in: if it ain't one thing it's another (12 days in the YMCA guest house waiting for on-post housing, car broke down the first working day after the New Year's holiday, assigned to government housing that truly looks worse than some of the project HUD housing I've seen as a police officer, etc.).

But I have almost always been the optimist so I've managed to smile through it all. We have just finished unpacking (won't bore you with the horror stories of moving 9,000 pounds of everything you own at the governments expense every 2-3 years or so and the damage and loss that always accompanies that!). But we are settled in and I do plan on getting right back to work on my web page.

If I haven't responded to an email during the last couple months or so I do truly apologize and I will respond very soon. I am going through all of the emails and other material I have received over the past year or so and I will be working to update the uploaded genealogy and other data that I have. Unfortunately, I loss the backup to my Ultimate Family Tree program, and the backup that I do have is extremely out-dated. I will be working to get that straightened out first and add any other data I have received before I upload again. If you visit my uploaded genealogy from the link on the family history page and you find any discrepancies, please let me know. My goal, of course is to be as objective and accurate as possible with the data that I put out. So, in advance, thanks for all the help!

In closing, happy New Year (whew, no more Y2K hype!) and I hope to hear from you soon!
