The Miner
During the 1930s, many young people had to leave the Upper Ottawa Valley to seek work in the gold and silver mines of Northern Ontario, on the Canadian Shield - a geological structure that covers two thirds of the country (the second largest country on earth, mind you) - rich in minerals and timber but impossible to farm. Because of its location and historical settlement patterns, the Timmins (Porcupine) - Timiskaming Region is often regarded as a cultural extension of the Upper Ottawa Valley.
I have recently included an English version of this song. |
