John Griffitts arrived in America from Bristol, England in 1750. Settling in the Dutch settlement in Franklin, Marion Co., PA.
He was later in Wythe Co., now Smythe Co., Virginia, where he bought 188 acres of land on the Holston River in 1787.
In 1792 he bought 1650 acres of Balsam Mountain timberland.
