Viney Griffitts was born in Greenbriar County, Virginia (now West Virginia) and family lore says he was named for John Griffitts' neighbor Jon Viney. Viney married Rachel Jenkins from North Carolina. They were married in either Wythe or Grayson County, Virginia.
Viney's headstone in Unita Cemetery, Lounden County, Tennessee indicates that he died at 73 years of age but family records indicate that he died at 78 years of age.
