LEDGE CARAVAN

This model was constructed in 1/8th scale, from plans drawn by the late John Thompson, of Hampshire.  The plans were prepared from the full-size caravan, which was built by the renowned maker 'Dunton of Reading'. This type of caravan was sometimes known as a cottage or ledge wagon.  The caravan has a narrow base with upright sides but from a point about 18" from the floor the sides are built out on 'ledges', hence the name.  The model is painted in a predominately green colour and highly decorated, with a total of 263 motifs on the outsides.  The inside is also decorated with a painted ceiling and a full complement of furnishings.  An added feature is that the roof lifts off so that the inside may be easily seen.  The model is constructed using hardwoods and birch plywood.  The paintwork is oil based and metal work is brass.

The furnishings: -

  • A bed chamber, complete with bedding has 4 colour etched mirrors, two of which slide to open and two doors which give access to further storage space.  A general-purpose table pulls out from the bed panel.
  • A stove made from copper and brass, complete with surround and etched mirrors to the mantle shelf. A painted cherub oil lamp provides the lighting.
  • A chest of draws with an etched glass top showing a typical horse picture.
  • A corner cupboard.  A cupboard with glass doors and three drawers, all of which are made to open and close.
  • A tea set, various plates, a teapot, a kettle (on the stove) a bucket and a water jug.
  • A carpeted floor, curtains fitted to the windows and leather covered seating.
