Ask yourself  "why" you are interested in adopting a pet.  Some reasons are not always conducive to a successful, long-term placement.  Example: adopting a kitten or a puppy "for" a very young child.  Others, like the desire to share your love and home with a companion animal are somewhat better.  Please consider temperament and time commitment when choosing between a cat or dog and between breeds.  Example:  Persian cats tend to be calm and like quiet; whereas, mixed breeds often enjoy more activity in their environment.

Please consider adopting one from the shelter.  (If you are planning to buy a pet from a breeder or pet store, you will be contributing to the intentional breeding of animals while many mixed and pure breeds are in need of lifelong homes.)

Plan on a 10-15 year commitment, as this is the average lifetime for most cats & dogs.

Ask yourself if you have the room to keep your pet, it's bed or box, etc. in your home.  Animals kept outside are prone to illness, loneliness and boredom.

Ask yourself if you have the financial resources to care for a pet, year after year.  Care includes spay/neuter, annual vaccinations, preventative medicine and quality food.  On Okinawa, "care" also includes the financial resources to move your pet with you when you PCS.
