Traffic Control

Traffic control can be a highly complex task. In order to maintain a smooth flow of traffic, it is imperative that the Explorer directing give clear and understandable directional signals to drivers. The Explorer must maintain a position in the roadway where he/she is readily visible to traffic, yet maintains a position providing safety to the Explorer. One way of insuring that traffic control is preformed effectively is by providing officers with a uniform method of directing and controlling traffic.

When directing traffic, Explorers are required to wear traffic vests for safety. These vests have special reflective tape on the back and stomach area as well as the shoulders. If directing at night, Explorers use flashlights equiped with Krypton Bulbs. These blubs are 300 times brighter than regular bulbs. Explorers often use their whistle as well as their flashlights/hand signals to insure that the driver sees the Explorer.

Situations which may require Explorers to direct traffic:

  • Accidents, fires and other emergencies, special public events, or activities.
  • Streets that have a predictable daily congestion that is connected to the normal flow of people going and returning from work.
  • Major street excavations, particulary at intersections adjacent to construction and during peak times of traffic flow.
  • Any condition which causes congestion of traffic in a particular area.
