Page Three

The editorial reviews the activity generated by AKL last spring - demonstrations, panels, uprising of international co-operation and so forth. More about these on the following pages! The other writing deals with Aldaris, an AKL project which main intention is to start up a movement for Baltic conscientious objectors and at the same time increase antimilitaristic co-operation in the Baltic Sea area. The first move towards this goal was the participation in the seminar held by Trans-Baltic Network in Riga last May.

Page Four and Five

Adam Keller, an ex-soldier portrays the crisis in the Israeli Army: the change in attitudes towards the authority of the army from the sixties and seventies upwards to contemporary thougts on obligatory military service and politically motivated resistance against the army and drafting. On page five there's a small story about Sergei Ashin, a concsientious objector, whom was beaten up by military police for resisting to wear an uniform.

Page Six

A bulletin on the demonstartion held last May aganist Finland's arms export to countries in war, to countries that opress minorities, to countries that execute killings and have dissappearances etc. The same page has a report from the festival held in Helsinki called "Maailma Kylässä," which targeted in enhacing international co-operation and understanding toawards the different. The sun was up, the music rang and AKL was happening!

Page Seven

A news clip from The Committee of 100 which reacts against the bloody cruelties that are happening in East Timor by the Indonesian occupation troups. The insanity continues - 300 000 dead! - even after UN:s claim to get the Indonesian goverment to draw their troops away. The other story dealts with the grim situation of concsientious objectors in Turkey. Antimilitaristic forces have been subjected to opression by authorities: a jailing of a war antagonist and the prosecution of twelve antimilitaries. A campain conducted by AKL was launched last April to stop the opression against the Turkish antimilitaristic forces.

Page Eight and Nine

This article dwells on the more and more becoming brutal line the Finnish police are falling into when dealing with activists - a new force with teargas and truncheons! With the help of the yellow press slandering and bunching different individuals into one group, a group against the rest of the society.

Page Ten

Three stories on activism in different parts of the world. Firstly a description of the American activist group "Prince of Peace Plowshares." The second situation deals with the arrest of four East Timorian breaking into a "Hawk" plant in England. Last but not least a case on AKL and Friends of Earth (HKI) helding a gathering on the theme "Environment and Armament".

Page Eleven

A half page report on the demonstration held in opposition of "The National Defence fair." Dozens of protestors reminding on the real consequenses of war on society and its victims. Finland has it's own group monitoring the Finnish arms export and the Turku branch of AKL has been actively participating.

Page Twelve

Campaining against nuclear weapons, insisting that every country should stop arms industry and use their resources on the wefare of humanbeings and the environment.

Page Thirteen

Discusses the treadwheel which NATO and the arms race have got into. Plus brief news on the situation of Finnish total objectors, which of some get imprisoned for their beliefs.

Page Fourteen and Fifteen

Article on Amnesty International campaining on getting draft resistance a possibility throughtout Europe. There's a quick informer on Trans-Baltic Network - founded in 1994. The Network consists of different kinds of peace , human rights and environmental organisations working together in the Baltic Sea area. TBN:s aim is to create an union working on lasting security between the assembled countries. The Finnish AKL joined the TBN last May.
