Photo back inscribed: "Taken Sept 1, 1945 at
Yokosuka Naval Air Base in Japan. This tunnel runs clean through the hill. There are many
tunnels branching off from it. This one had more torpedoes in it. A tunnel next to this
one had airplanes stowed in it. The Japs sure spent a lot of time digging these
tunnels. There is evidence that it was done mostly by hand. That board wall on my
left slides on a track over the entrance during air attacks. Notice the
camouflage. I don't know what the sign says, maybe 'Buy more War Bonds'." |

Inscribed
with " Taken at Yokosuka Naval Air Base on Sept 1, 1945. This is the 'Baka',
latest Jap suicide plane which was used extensively at Okinawa. Notice the immense
warhead in the nose section." |

The back of this photo reads, "Taken Sept 1, 1945 at Yokosuka Naval Air Base
in Japan. This is the interior of one of the many tunnels throughout the hills on
the base. This one had aerial torpedoes stowed in it. The officer with the
pistol is our bomb disposal officer and booby trap expert. I stayed away from
things until he gave the O.K. He had just given the O.K. when this picture was
snapped. The other officer is Lt. Lehman." |

Picture
of V-3 Division taken Dec. 6, 1944. My father, Lt Charles E. White, is third from
right in last row. The bull mascot was repainted into a 'G' rated version when
the ship was in port. Obviously, this picture was taken while at sea. Click here for a closeup of the mascot and the scoreboard. |

Picture of Fox Division (Ordnance) submitted by
Scott Anderson. (I'm guessing this was a popular place to have unit pictures
taken.) His Dad, Robert Anderson, is fifth from right in last row. Robert
served aboard the Cowpens as an Aviation Ordnanceman from '44 - '45. |

Picture of Second Division submitted on behalf of John Ward
Mahoney. Seaman 1st Class Mahoney, originally of Randolph, MA, served aboard the
Cowpens from it's Commisioning through early 1945. |
