safti story
established in june 1966 to raise an officer corps for singapore's independent armed forces, safti at pasir laba road rapidly became the well-spring of the whole saf, turning out not only a new breed of officers and ncos, but also the nuclei of the bulk of the land force's components. so much impact did safti have in moulding the highly-professional military force that the acronym has become a byword for the excellence and professionalism.
on 1 march 1995, the officer cadet school, organised since 1992 into a tri-service school, moved from safti at pasir laba camp into a 88-hectacre campus housing all the principal leadership training establishments of the saf officer corps. as anchor tenant, ocs is located with the singapore armed forces advanced schools and the singapore command and staff college. they are supported by the department of strategic studies and the instructional technology centre.
in perpetuation of the spirit of safti at pasir laba, the camp is called 'the safti military institute' and is the official home of the saf officer corps.
the new camp was mooted in 1982 by then prime minister lee kuan yew. mr lee saw the need to inspire in future generations of saf officers the spirit of sacrifice and diligence of the pioneer cohorts of satfi in the uncertain times of singapore's beginnings as an independent nation. mr lee recognised the powerful role of evocative architecture and landscape in forming the value systems of a leadership training institution.
