On October 22, 1998 the
Força Aérea Brasileira
announced that Elbit Systems has won the contract to upgrade its F-5 fleet
(from 45 up to 60) with
Embraer
being the prime contractor for the project. The upgrade is expected to include
an avionics upgrade with HOTAS, a new radar and large-format multi-functions
LCDs.

On October 2, 1998 at the
Sâo Pedro d'Aldeia
Naval Air Station the first AF-1 (A-4KU) serialled N-1001 was rolled-out.
This is an important ceremony for the
Marinha
because it marks its return to the air power scene after 33 years.
On that date the
1º Esquadro de Aviões de Interceptaçâo
e Ataque (VFA-1)
was commissioned with 20 AF-1 (Ex-A-4KU serialled from N-1001 to N-1020) and 3 AF-1A
(Ex-TA-4KU serialled from N-1021 to N-1023).
The Skyhawks were overhauled by Boeing in Kuwait before the transfer and the total
cost of the package was US$ 83 millions.

production line during 1999 in order to honor the new orders from
Guatemala
(5) and
El Salvador
(5). An further order of 10 aircrafts from

is also being rumored.

Almirante Arancibia
opened the Chilean frigate design and manufacture program to other countries in
the region, in what might become the first joint naval program in the
continent and a sign of times to come, during a speach at the
Conferencia Internacional de Defensa (Exponav'98)

Valparaíso.

On December 2, 1998 Exponav'98 was inaugurated in
Valparaíso.
This is the first edition of what the Chileans would like to be the
first edition of a new tradition; the first South American naval trade
show.

V Brigada Aérea
crashed on take-off from

air base.

On October 21, 1998 the US Congress approved a US$201 million help deal to the
Policia Nacional de Colombia
as part of a much larger drug traffic fighting program.
The package includes the purchase of 6 UH-60L Black Hawk helicopters, the
upgrade of some 50 UH-1 Iroquois helicopters to the "Super Huey" standard
and the purchase of some transports in the form of more Basler Turbo 67.

crashed near
San Vicente del Caguan
in the
Caqueta
province, killing the pilot.

eight-seat light utility aircraft on June 16, 1998.

Sometime late in October 1998 the US State Department approved the
upgrade of plus two new attrition replacement of
Fuerza Aérea Ecuatoriana's
fleet of Kfir C-2/T-2. The whole package is estimated at
some US$ 60 million.

Sometime in October 1998 the first of two Bell 412EP Sentinel
ASW/ASV helicopters was delivered to the
Aviación Naval Ecuatoriana.
These aircrafts have significant electronic equipments and can be equipped with
either a pair of Mk 46 torpedoes or Kongsberg Penguin missiles.

News from Guatemala

On October 26, 1998
ENAER
officially delivered 5
T-35B Pillán
to the
Fuerza Aérea de Guatemala,
serialled 200 to 204 (Ex-FACh serials 102 to 106).
They were escorted on their trip to
Guatemala
by Turbo Basler 67 serial 530.
These were used aircrafts that belonged formerly to the
Grupo de Aviación Nº11.
Some 5 brand new aircrafts should be delivered sometime in 1999.

News from México

On July 23, 1998 the Short Skyvan serialed TP-21 from the
8º Grupo Aéreo/Escuadrón de Transporte Ejecutivo
of the Mexican Air Force crashed on its way from
México
to
Tuxtla Gutierrez (Chiapas).
Some 6 to 8 persons died in the crash.

News from Perú

Three more MiG-29 Fulcrums have been bought by the
Fuerza Aérea Peruana (FAP)
directly from the Russian arms export agency Rosvooruzheniye and are
to be delivered within the next seven months.
A support contract for all of the MiG-29 Fulcrums in existance has
been also agreed on fixing the spares and post-sales maintenance current issues.

On August 24, 1998 a PC-6/B2-H2 Turbo Porter from
Fuerza Aérea Peruana (FAP)
was written-off in a crash on landing at
Iquitos.
Details remain unconfirmed.
