THE HISTORY OF MAINE VETERANS'
HOMES
Maine citizens and the Maine State Legislature, through a bond issue in 1977, created the Maine Veterans' Homes. In 1983, the first Home opened in Augusta providing 120 nursing home beds. A 40 bed nursing facility attached to the Cary Medical Center in Caribou opened in 1990, and mid-summer that year, a 120 bed Home opened on US Rte #1 in Scarborough. In 1995, a 90 bed facility opened in July in South Paris on High Street and later, in October, a 120 bed Home opened on the Hogan Road in Bangor. The Homes are teaching nursing homes affiliated with schools of nursing and family physician residency programs, enabling our staff to stay on the leading edge of rehabilitative and geriatric medicine.
CHAPLAIN'S SERVICES
R.S. McMillin Post #11363 has maintained a
presence in the So. Paris, Maine Veterans' Home since it first opened,
by providing the Home with a Chaplain. Each Tuesday, the Chaplain conducts
non-denominational church services and in-room visitation for the residents.
Throughout the many months, a close relationship has grown between the
Chaplain's staff and the residents. The Chaplain is on-call 24 hours a
day.
