Task 1: Protect Yourself from Chemical and Biological Injury/Contamination Using the M17- or M40-Series Field Protective Masks with Hoods.

TEST CONDITIONS: Soldiers wear Chemical Protective OverGarment (CPOG), overboots and LBE/ETLBV/TLBV, M16 rifle/M4 carbine in hand before beginning the test. White cotton liners, black rubber overgloves in CPOG pocket (MOPP 2). Given an M17 or M40-series Field Protective Mask (FPM) with hood and carrier worn in the leg-carry position or worn in the underarm position. You are in one of the following situations:

1. Hear or see a chemical or biological attack.

2. Realize through other means that you are under a chemical or biological attack.

3. Ordered to mask.

4. Enter a contaminated area.

TEST STANDARDS: (M17) Don and check the M17-series Field Protective Mask within nine seconds; then pull the hood over his head and zip the front closed to cover all bare skin within an additional 6 seconds. Soldiers finish in MOPP 3 posture.

NOTE: Performance measures 3 through 8 on the scorecard are not timed but must be done in sequence.

TEST STANDARDS: (M40) Don the M40-series Field Protective Mask within 9 seconds (to include clearing and checking the mask). Then, pull the hood over his head and zip the front closed (if the hood has a zipper) to cover all bare skin within an additional 6 seconds. Soldiers finish in MOPP 3 posture.

NOTE: Performance measures 3 and 4 on the scorecard are not timed but must be done in sequence.

EQUIPMENT REQUIRED FOR POINT: Stopwatch, clipboard, field table, pencil, and FB Form 20-7-R and FB Form 20-7-R(M17).

SITE SETUP: No specific site setup required.

Once masked, the candidate continues to wear the Field Protective Mask throughout the NBC testing.

"Let me have your attention. At this point, you are required to protect yourself from chemical and biological injury/contamination using the M17-series Field Protective Mask and hood. Remove your helmet and place on top of your rifle/carbine barrel. You will then don and check the M17-series Field Protective Mask within 9 seconds, then pull the hood over your head and zip the front closed, covering all bare skin around the neck within an additional 6 seconds. This places you in a MOPP 3 posture."

NOTE: "The task is not required to be timed but must be done correctly. Pull the draw cord slider snug, as the mission allows. Fasten the underarm straps, adjusting them with buddy aid, if available as the mission allows. Replace the Kevlar© PASGT helmet on top of your head. Close the Field Protective Mask carrier. Continue the mission. Remove the Field Protective Mask with hood after the 'all clear' order is issued. Store the Field Protective Mask in the carrier. Do you understand what you are to do?"

Remove your helmet and place on top of your rifle/carbine barrel. You will then don the M40-series Field Protective Mask within 9 seconds (including clearing and checking the mask). Pull the hood over your head and zip the front closed (if your hood has a zipper) to cover all bare skin around the neck within an additional 6 seconds. This places you in a MOPP 3 posture."

NOTE: "This will not be timed but must be done correctly. Don the hood, so that it lies smoothly on your head. Remove your Field Protective Mask with hood after the 'all clear' order is given. Store your Field Protective Mask with hood. Do you understand what you are to do?"

1. Remove helmet, place on rifle/carbine barrel

2. Don FP mask within 9 seconds.

3. Don the hood within an additional 6 seconds.

4. Pull the hood draw cord slider snug.

5. Fasten the hood underarm straps and adjust them.

6. Replace your Kevlar© PASGT helmet over the FP mask and hood.

7. Close your FP mask carrier.

8. Remove your FP mask after the "all clear" order is given.

9. Store the FP mask in the carrier

Allow the candidate to proceed for 2 minutes.)

Task 1: Administer Nerve-Agent Antidote Kit (NAAK) to Self (Self-Aid)

TEST CONDITIONS: Soldiers wear Kevlar© PASGT helmet, Chemical Protective OverGarment (CPOG), overboots and LBE/ETLBV/TLBV, M16 rifle/M4 carbine in hand before beginning the test. White cotton liners, black rubber overgloves in CPOG pocket (MOPP 3). Nerve Agent Antidote Kit autoinjectors training aids are placed in their proper position INSIDE the Field Protective Mask carrier. The candidate's unit has come under a chemical attack. The candidate is wearing Kevlar© PASGT helmet, CPOG, overboots, an M17-/M40-series protective mask, carrier (MOPP 3) and LBE/ETLBV/TLBV, M16 rifle/M4 carbine and is given a Nerve-Agent Antidote Kit (NAAK) training set.

TEST STANDARDS:

1. Name seven of the eight symptoms within 4 minutes.

2. Administer the nerve-agent antidote within 1 minute.

SOLDIER'S MANUAL CROSSWALK: This task does not differ from Common Task Training number 081-831-1030 in STP 21-1-SMCT, page 507.

EQUIPMENT REQUIRED FOR POINT: Stopwatch, Nerve-Agent Antidote Kit (Mark 1), field table, clipboard, pen, and FB Form 20-8-R.

SITE SETUP: Give the Mark 1 Nerve Agent Antidote Kit trainer to the candidate when he arrives. The candidate must place the kit in his Field Protective Mask carrier. The grader must be prepared to test the candidate on eight symptoms of nerve-agent poisoning. He must also be prepared to name two symptoms and tell the candidate that he has the symptoms and must take corrective actions.

"Let me have your attention. At this point, you are required to administer nerve-agent antidote to self (self-aid). You will orally state at least seven of eight symptoms of nerve-agent poisoning. You are then told that you have two of these symptoms. You must take the corrective action of administering a nerve-agent antidote to yourself within one minute. These actions will be timed. You will answer questions about nerve-agent poisoning. You will be given an Nerve Agent Antidote Kit, which you will place inside your Field Protective Mask carrier. Do you understand what you must do?"

If there are any questions, you may repeat the instructions but you may not elaborate on what you have read.

Pause for 5 seconds.

"Name seven of the eight symptoms of nerve-agent poisoning. You have 4 minutes."

Record answers. When the candidate finishes, say the following:

"You have (state two of the eight symptoms of a nerve agent) and must take corrective actions when I say,"

Pause 5 seconds.

"Begin."

Start timing. After 1 minute, announce the following loudly enough for the candidate to hear:

"Stop."

When ready, the scorer will ask the following question.

  "What do you do if the symptoms continue?"

Task 1: Decontaminate Your Skin Using the M258A1 or M291 Skin Decontaminating Kit

TEST CONDITIONS: During daylight hours, the candidate is wearing an M17-/M40-series Field Protective Mask and has an M258A1 or an M291 personal decontamination kit (training).

TEST STANDARDS: Within five minutes, the candidate will decontaminate the skin on his hand using the M258A1 or M291 decontamination kit (training).

SOLDIER'S MANUAL CROSSWALK: This task does not differ from Common Task Training numbers 031-503-1007 (M258A1) and 031-503-1033 (M291) in STP 21-1-SMCT pages 331 and 450.

SITE SETUP: Ensure overhead cover is available to the candidate.
