MALS-49 was formed in 1969 as Headquarters and Maintenence Squadron 49, and was based at Brooklyn, NY. In 1970, H&MS-49 relocated to Lakehurst, NJ. Two years later the squadron relocated again, to Willow Grove, PA. H&MS-49 was redesignated in 1988 as Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 49 (MALS-49). In 1994 MALS-49 relocated to Stewart AFB, NY, and in 2003 became the sole rotary-wing support unit for 4th MAW.
