My trip to South America went from 18 July 1999
through 8 August 1999. The purpose of the trip was
to provide technical assistance and to perform
routine maintenance on locally owned seismic equipment.
The equipment currently supports the United States
Atomic Energy Detection System (USAEDS) located
at the Air Force Technical Applications Center
(AFTAC), Patrick
AFB, Florida. Part of the reason for the
trip is to see what needs to be done to bring
the sites into specifications to comply with the Comprehensive
Test Ban Treaty that has recently been ratified
by congress and President Clinton. Under this arrangement
the sites will become part of the new National
Data Center (at AFTAC) and its data will be forwarded to
the International Data Center in Vienna Austria.
My job is to ensure the data from the seismometer gets
to here at Patrick AFB and then on to Vienna.
The sites I visited on this trip were San
Juan and Paso Flores Argentina,
Brasilia Brazil
and La Paz
Bolivia.
