My Father

~DevilSpyder's Story~

Ok... so where did he get such a name? I *know* this is what you are all asking, otherwise why would you have looked into this link, eh? *grin*

Like I stated in my homepage, my name is NOT related to Spyder Ski equipment like so many who use my handle, nor is it a reference to the Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder, although that IS an *awesome* vehicle.

No, the story of my handle is much more deep that that, and let me share it with you now:

My father, whom I admire greatly, was a recovering alcoholic. He had only recently (after six years) been able to hold a conversation or get out of the house. He used to drink very heavily and the only way to get him to stop was to put him on depressant drugs for two years. Eventually he did get over his habit, and get back to real life. Unfortunately though that life was taken from him after his long illness on November 17th, 1999.

My father used to work at General Motors in Bay City, Michigan on the line. In his area there were four men named Tom, so they decided to give them all nicknames. My father happened to be wearing the shirt shown above with a huge spider on it, so they called him Spider.

When I first got into using a modem, my father, my brother and I all called local BBS's and we were introduced to Handles (Screen Names these days) there. He picked his work nickname of Spider, I picked a more unglamorous name of Tenor ( pertaining to my playing of the Tenor Saxophone ). Well, he had his drinking problems shortly thereafter, and I felt bad for him. ( Plus I hated my handle ) So I borrowed his. But Spider to me was plain so I changed it to Spyder because it looked cool. About four months or so after that was when I first saw Spyder Ski equipment, and then I noticed all the other Spyder's out there, so I tried something new by adding the tilde's to make ~Spyder~.

The final part of my handle being the Devil came into play back in March of 1999 when I graduated boot camp for the United States Marine Corps. A common Marine nickname is Devil Dog ( from the word Teufelhunde, a name Germans gave to Marines fighting in WWI ) so I decided I'd be ~Devil Spyder~.
