British Television Shows

Britons have a quirky sense of humor which does not view intellect and comedy as exclusive of each other. This is combined with a nation filled with bustling cities, country villages, rolling countryside, stately manor houses and abandoned castles. All these elements make Britain a perfect setting for television shows. Some of the best TV in history has been made in Britain - find out why.

The best TV show in history!

If you can't understand why this show is in a class by itself - you never will.

The second best TV show in history.

John Steed and Emma Peel appear to be two ordinary average Britons who have strange sense of humor, enjoy driving in the country, investigating mysteries, getting into trouble and wearing impractical clothes. Mr. Steed, who has no apparent employer or means of earning a living, wears dark suits, a bowler hat and always carries an umbrella (although it never seems to rain).

Mrs. Emma Peel, whose husband is conveniently out of town on an extended business trip, doesn't have a job either but seems to able to afford a great number of black leather outfits and seems utterly undisturbed that no one she meets seems to notice her unusual attire.

Together, they seem to have an uncanny talent for finding trouble, usually involving some type of mad scientist and his secret hideaway (usually in a manor house in the English countryside featuring numerous secret passages).

Somehow they manage to defeat their opponents and be ready to break open a convenient bottle of champagne at the end of it all.

Only the British could make all this believable enough to make a hit TV show of it all in the late 1960's. (Long before black leather and female espionage hobbyists were popular.)

P.S. Thanks to modern technology and the inexorable justice of capitalism you can now buy the Avengers on Video!

Danger Man

Also known as "Secret Agent" this show was about a British Spy named John Drake. He was noted for being immaculatly dressed, at odds with his superiors, curiously celibate and never using a gun. (John Steed, Sherlock Holmes, Batman and Sheriff Andy Taylor are the only other human crime fighters who have this distinction.) He also bore an uncanny resemblance to the lead character of The Prisoner q.v. Is it coincidence? I think not!

Why are John Drake and Emma Peel apparently celibate when they would make such a good couple? Why does John Steed have no romantic interest in Emma Peel? Why did "The Prisoner" come on after "Seret Agent"? Why did Emma Peel join The Avengers while Danger Man was on? Why did Emma Peel leave the Avengers after Number Six left the village? Enquiring minds want to know!

Monty Python

The Funniest TV Show in History! Only the Brits could make the meer utterance of the words "Albatross" and "Bruce" bring laughter to the show's fans.
