Bibliography
Selected References for the
Campaign and Battle of Mill Springs
Compiled by Geoff Walden
Note on the Sources: The
following bibliography contains several rather obscure and hard-to-find resources.
To aid those who wish to read only the most important and comprehensive sources, the
following annotated listing is provided.
Myers, Raymond E.
The Zollie Tree. Louisville: The Filson Club Press, 1964 (reprinted 1998 for the Mill Springs Battlefield Assn.). This is the most comprehensive
modern source, with the best use of period references. This book is the best single
source on the campaign and battle.
Kelly, Col. R.M.
"Holding Kentucky for the Union," in Battles and Leaders of The Civil War,
Vol. 1. New York: Thomas Yoseloff, 1956, pp. 373- 392. Battles &
Leaders has been reprinted many times, and is easy to find. This is an
excellent synopsis of the campaign and battle, with the best published map (although it
has some inaccuracies).
McMurtry, R. Gerald
"Zollicoffer and the Battle of Mill Springs," Filson Club Historical
Quarterly, Vol. 29, No. 4 (Oct. 1955), pp. 303-319. A good account of the
battle, which should be fairly easy to find in larger libraries.
