Confederate Casualty Lists
Campaign and Battle of Fishing Creek, Kentucky
Compiled by Geoffrey R.
Walden
This section is divided into four
separate listings. The first of these lists those soldiers known to have been killed
or mortally wounded during the battle. The next
list shows those who died in area hospitals after the battle; some of these were
likely mortally wounded during the battle, but others probably died of disease or other
causes unrelated to the battle; the third list
shows those who died in the area from disease or other causes before the battle; and the final list shows those who died in the area during
this period, but it is unknown whether before or after the battle, or from what
cause. The numbered notes for each list
appear at the end of List 4.
The soldiers who were killed in action,
and those listed here as mortally wounded, were buried in mass graves on the battlefield
and at adjacent field hospitals. These soldiers have cenotaphs in the Zollicoffer
Confederate Cemetery on the battlefield. As far as is known, only the bodies of Gen.
Zollicoffer and Lt. Peyton (20th Tennessee Infantry) were removed from the field for
burial elsewhere (one source says Capt. Fogg died later in Tennessee, but this has not
been confirmed).
