SIR WALLY
A Cat Among the .... D*GS!!

I was a SOLID WHITE CAT

If a cat is pretty much the same color all over, it is a "solid." Some people, especially in England, use the word "self" instead of "solid." A "solid white" is white all over. Sometimes white cats have blue eyes, sometimes they have green or gold eyes, and sometimes one eye is blue and one eye is green or gold! This last color is called "odd-eyed white." I had one blue eye and one green eye so I AM AN ODD-EYED CAT!

When I arrived, I waded right into the herd of Pekingese. I was not in the least afraid of dogs. Now they have a solid white dog too...Haley Jo. She is the youngest and would like to chase me but I never ran.

Solid white cats are the result of a different gene that suppresses color completely. Young white cats often have vague smudges of color on the top of the head where the color is not completely suppressed. Sometimes this persists even in an older white cat.

Some people say white cats are always deaf....

No. Some white cats are deaf, and some are not. If a white cat has blue eyes, it is more likely to be deaf than a white cat with gold or green eyes. Deaf cats make perfectly good house pets, although they should not be allowed outside because they can't hear cars coming. I was NOT deaf although I did have problems hearing the word "NO!"

What kind of cat am I? LORD OF THE MANOR...of course! I think I was an American Shorthair but I also could have been a Turkish Angora. My human MOM took up reading cat books...take that, you beastly Pekes!

A Purr Is a Miracle in More Ways Than One!
By Gina Spadafori

The mystery of the purr...
What a wonder even the smallest cat's purr is! Big cats roar, but they cannot purr, at least not as our cats do, rumbling their pleasure warmly on both the inhale and the exhale.

Perhaps more interesting than the uniqueness of the purr is its mystery: After thousands of years with cats in our inner circle, we are still not sure exactly how they purr. A vibration, sure, but how? The rattling of skin folds, say some, while others argue that the sound is the movement of air through swollen blood vessels.

The purr is the essence of all that is wonderful about cats. And although I am no scientist, I have my own theory of where such a beautiful sound originates. I have no doubt that it comes straight from the heart.
