Draco's Dungeon

My Buddy

Draco is my first dog. We had another Golden that we rescued from the pound, but she was my dad's dog more than anything. Bud-boy is all mine!! We got him from a local breeder. At the time, I didn't really care what personality my dog had as long it was a male GSD (German Shepherd Dog). He was the only male left in the litter, so I chose him. Well, later we learned that he was the runt of the pack, and a first class wuss. But I don't really care because he is still sweet as sugar and a good dog, most of the time.

I had decided on a call name for him before I got him, and before I even knew I had to register a long name with the AKC (American Kennel Club). I picked the name "Draco" because it means "Dragon" in Old Latin. I also picked it because it is the name of my favorite constillation (Draco, duh).

Here he is in a stack

Draco is currently 5 years old and is 90 pounds. He stands about 27 inches high and is in good shape physically. He is not the most social animal in the world, but we are working on it. It is harder than you think to socialize a big, black dog! Most people we meet keep their distance even though he doesn't even look remotely mean, much less dangerous. Sure if someone came after me or Phro or the rest of the family, he would pretty much rip them to shreds, but otherwise, he literally couldn't hurt a fly. He is SO cute!! I am now training him for Junior Showmanship and Obedience. He went to his first two shows in December, and did well. Although we won second out of two, we did very good in the ring. Our competition was ready to advance to open the second day, but stayed back to give us practice (thanks Will!!). Except two days is too much for two newbies' first shows! Well, it was my second, but his first. He got very frustrated with the judge on Sunday. I think we'll stick to one per weekend for a while.

Draco and I spend loads of time working on our CD Obedience exercises, Juniors practice, and grooming since he sheds worse than a dead Christmas tree. We have really become attached to each other. Sure, he is not the most perfect dog in history, but he could run for the sweetest. He has really taught me to love dogs, and the GSD breed. I hope there is a special place reserved for him in heaven.
