My Medical Technology Page

I originally chose medical technology as my career because I had always been interested in science. I thought I had wanted to be a doctor, but pre-med courses proved to be too tough.

When I was in college, a friend began taking Medical Technology courses. The first was Hematology, and there were beautiful colored slides projected on a screen in the classroom. That was the first time I had ever seen a Wright-Geimsa stain of human blood cells. If you have never seen this, the red blood cells stain a salmon color and the white blood cell nuclei stain purple, and they sometimes have tan or red or dark blue staining granules in the cytoplasm. The cytoplasm varies from cobalt blue to a pale pink. The combination of colors really is very pretty.

I started taking the classes the following year. I studied Clinical Chemistry, Immunohematology (also known as Blood Banking), Serology, and Microbiology along with Hematology. I was not too fond of Microbiology - something about all those bacteria gave me the willies - but the rest of the courses were interesting. I also took courses in chemistry and biology. I obtained my Associates in Applied Science back in 1978.

In the fall of 1978, I moved to Buffalo, New York. I started taking courses towards my Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology about a year later, and graduated in May 1982 with a BSMT. That's when I moved to Florida, to get out of the cold (LOL). There is more to my story here.
