Every Kiss Is a Kiss You Can Never Get Back
Author's note: Clay owns himself and his own name. I only wrote the words to the story.

The next morning
"Clay... Clay..."
Kim's voice cut through his dreams of married life with Kate, and he blinked awake as she shook him lightly. His eyes crying out bloody murder for falling asleep wearing his contacts, he glanced at his watch. 6:43 - we did it again.
"You can't be making a habit of this," Kim chided him.
"I know," Clay told her as he heaved a wistful sigh. Never enough time together. Very gingerly Clay nudged Kate, giving her forehead a light kiss. "Kate... Kate honey..." Kate stirred, opening her eyes. "I'm sorry to wake you, honey," he said quietly.
Kate smiled gently, contentment in her eyes. "Good morning, love."
Instantly Clay beamed at her as Kim hid a smile. "Good morning to you too."
"Ow," Kate said, blinking her eyes. "I can't believe we fell asleep out here again."
Clay nodded. "I know."
Kate grumbled. "At least the other night we weren't wearing our contacts." She blinked her eyes again, hoping to finally get some moisture back in the lenses. "Guess I'll be flying home in my glasses..."
The idea that today was Kate's departure date was still a sobering thought, but Clay was determined not to let it get him down. At least not right now. With a slight chuckle, Clay kissed her on the forehead a second time. "Looks that way." Kate pretended to pout, and he smiled at her pleading eyes. "All right..." Clay leaned upward and kissed her on her lips. I am going to miss this, he thought as he savored it.
When the kiss started to deepen, Kim rolled her eyes. "I know exactly what I'm getting you two for Christmas: a marriage license and a hotel room."
Clay broke the kiss to glare up at Kim. "Don't you have somewhere else to be right now?"
"Don't you two," Kim returned, her hands on her hips, "have to be getting ready? Last I knew, her plane leaves in three or four hours... and somehow I don't think she's ready to go."
"You're telling me," Kate whined, holding tightly onto Clay.
Kim snickered under her breath as she watched Clay stroke her hair reassuringly. "That's not what I meant when I said that."
Kate scowled. "No, I'm not packed. Satisfied?"
"Better get started..." Kim shrugged, ignoring Kate's annoyed groan.
Clay helped Kate stand, giving her a supportive hand as she slipped her shoes from last night on her feet. "What sounds good for breakfast, honey? I'll see if I can't talk Kim into fixing something for us."
"ONLY if she offers," Kate insisted.
Kim smiled at Kate. "Since you put it that way, I'm offering, just for you."
"Oh, thanks..." Clay snorted.
"I can always make scrambled eggs and bacon," Kim suggested.
"Whatever works for you," Kate replied, "since you're sweet enough to offer."
Kim gave Kate a warm hug, which Kate returned. "Hurry and get showered up, hon, and I'll have it done by the time you're dressed." She shooed Kate down the hall to the spare room, and turned back to Clay with a wicked grin on her face. "Considering I found you two asleep on the couch again, I take it things went well last night." Clay broke into an irrepressibly cheesy grin, and Kim nodded. "And that would be a yes answer, Clay."
"We are definitely in love with each other," Clay beamed.
"Mm," Kim smirked. "So you told her?"
Clay nodded, biting his lower lip. "I did... after she told me!"
Kim laughed warmly, and gave Clay a big hug. "How's it feel?"
Still grinning from ear to ear, Clay sighed deep and long. "There's no words to describe it. It's like being wrapped inside of happiness and joy. It's knowing that you can totally depend on someone else, and they can totally depend on you." His eyes twinkled. "It's knowing that you want to share every waking moment and even your nights too with that person."
"Really." Kim skewered him with a thoughtful gaze. "You propose?"
"I wanted to," he admitted, "but she wasn't ready. She has too much healing to do before I do that. We'll see how her healing goes before I try again." Clay continued to chew on his lip, deep in thought.
Kim's eyes sparkled with mischief. "Christmas is coming, you know."
Immediately Clay's eyes lit up, and Kim could tell that idea pleased him very much. "We'll have to see," he said cautiously, "how it goes."
Kim nodded with a smug smirk, wondering with amusement whether Jerome and Will would be open to her placing a bet of her own with them.

In the spare room after Kate's shower
Kate scanned the caller ID screen on her ringing cell phone. Sarah Sarah Sarah... "Hello..."
"Katydid," Sarah scolded, "what's the point of having a cell phone if you never answer it?"
"I was in the shower!" Kate protested. "Alone," she quickly added.
Sarah giggled. "You didn't have to say that, Katydid. I know you well enough by now."
"Maybe," Kate acknowledged, "but I'd say some things must be changing, because we fell asleep on the couch again last night."
"You two..." Sarah sighed. "Are you sure you don't want me to make arrangements with Pastor Sullivan for Christmas?"
"Sarah..." Kate frowned. "He has to propose first." Instantly Kate remembered the conversation she and Clay had last night, and after a contented sigh she started giggling under her breath.
Sarah heard. "Spill it."
"You're incorrigible!"
"Your point is...?" Sarah asked. "Spill it."
Kate pulled her suitcase out of the closet and placed it on the bed. Opening it somberly, she gave a single quiet chuckle. "Yesterday," she began, "was absolutely beautiful in every way. Even the rain was beautiful."
"It did rain!" Sarah laughed appreciatively. "You guys get out of it in time?"
"Uh..."
"Ack!" Sarah exclaimed. "Go on! Tell! Tell! Tell all!"
"Down girl!" Kate snorted.
"You are going to tell me."
Kate snickered soundlessly, shaking her head at her roommate. "Some things."
"Kathryn Joy Kirche..."
"It was a gorgeous day for a hike," Kate told her, "and we talked about all sorts of things. Haiti... teaching... Christmas... our families' opinions of our little romance..."
"Oo," Sarah cooed. "His family likes you, don't they?"
"According to Clay they do." Kate started to place her clothes in her suitcase. "Now all I have to do is get my family's impression of Clay."
"Considering what they've seen of him on TV," Sarah said, "they like him. So far they do, anyway. It'll be interesting to get their opinions of the natural, real Clay."
"That's what I mean." Kate went on. "But we realized yesterday that Mom knew he and I were getting together. You know how she's been giving me every little bit of Clay trivia she can dig up - it's because she knew we would be getting together."
"Oh," Sarah answered matter-of-factly. "I knew that. Your mom and I talked about it once."
Kate stood still in shocked silence. How come I'm always the last to know? She made an annoyed noise before changing the subject. "We had our picnic in a little clearing off the path. Really nice picnic."
"What did you have?" Sarah asked.
"Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches," Kate answered. Sarah snickered, and Kate continued. "Chips, grapes, cookies, and sodas. You know... grapes are a surprisingly romantic and sexy food."
Sarah choked on the other end of the phone, and Kate grimaced. "Katydid, don't say things like that when I'm trying to drink my OJ. Orange juice through the nose burns."
Ow. Didn't need to know that... "Breathing's good," Kate nodded.
"What, were you feeding them to each other or something?" When Kate giggled, Sarah snorted. "You're silly, Katydid."
"It was fun."
"I don't doubt that," Sarah snorted again.
"You know, I never have given you a nickname like you've given me..." Kate informed her.
"I think I'll survive," Sarah muttered. "I'm glad you enjoyed your picnic. So when did you get caught in the rainstorm?"
"We were laying there on the blanket cuddling when Clay noticed the clouds," Kate recalled. "We packed up right away, but even going almost full tilt we still didn't get back to the car in time. Bam," she declared, "we found ourselves caught in a downpour. Not just a minor shower, a downpour."
"Oh my..." Sarah chuckled. "So what were you two wearing this time?"
Kate heaved a patient sigh. "Light-colored T-shirts..."
Sarah burst into wholeheartedly delighted laughter as Kate turned bright red. "How hard did he stare?" Sarah giggled.
"You're incorrigible."
"You know it," Sarah replied. "Stared pretty hard, didn't he?"
Kate nodded, her nose wrinkling with embarrassment. "There was plenty of staring going on."
"Really." Sarah giggled again. "I take it you were staring at him too?"
"Darn straight," Kate admitted. "I didn't think he could get any sexier until that rain hit."
"Uh oh..." Once more Sarah broke into appreciative laughter. "I think I know where it went from there. He decided that right then and there was the perfect time to kiss you silly. Am I right?"
"Aaaaaaaahhhh..." Kate stammered, once more flushing. "Not quite."
"Hunh?" Sarah asked. "The two of you are obviously attracted to each other and hopelessly in love. You spent your lunchtime cuddling and feeding each other grapes. Now you tell me that after you got caught in a downpour wearing light-colored T-shirts, he didn't start kissing you passionately?"
"He did kiss me... rather passionately..." Kate acknowledged, "... but uh... he didn't start it."
"ACK!" Sarah shrieked. "YOU started it???"
Kate giggled sheepishly. "Yeah... I did..."
"Maybe you don't need a therapist after all," Sarah murmured.
"Yes I do," Kate insisted. "Let me finish telling you about our day, and you'll understand."
Sarah paused quietly. "All right. Go on."
"Um..." Kate stammered, "... our hormones were starting to get the best of us out there in the rain. Clay made us go home before we... broke one of the three rules."
A sharp intake of breath sounded over the phone. "Really. What... what happened? Can you talk about it?"
"Er, well..." Kate winced. "Considering I was the one who weakened, it was probably a good thing. Especially once we realized that we both wanted to get a lot more physical with each other."
"Oh." Somehow Sarah knew she wasn't going to get any more out of Kate on the subject here and now. She would have to pry the information out of her roommate later. "So you went back to the house and changed clothes, I take it."
Kate blushed. "Yeah. Kim saw us come in all wet. She knows about the hunches now, by the way." Kate chewed on her lip nervously. "Um, Sarah...?"
"Yes...?"
"Have you ever... had... or given... a 'love bruise'?" Kate asked delicately.
Sarah choked back a bark of laughter. "Love bruise? You mean a hickey?" She started to giggle. "Don't tell me -"
"Just answer the question!" Kate begged, flushing brilliantly.
"Katydid," Sarah purred, "I've had, I've given. So which are you, the giver or the recipient?"
Kate covered her face with a moan. "The giver..." she whispered with deep embarrassment. Sarah laughed loud and long until Kate was ready to crawl under the bed. "It was an accident," she protested.
"Oh, I don't doubt that," Sarah gasped. "You're too sweet and innocent to do it on purpose."
"It was just that... I was really really caught up in the moment, and after all that passionate kissing," Kate murmured as Sarah stifled a giggle, "there was something about that exquisite long neck of his that I found irresistible." She winced. "Had no idea what I had done until Kim noticed it back at the house."
"You didn't pack enough to eat at lunch," Sarah teased, "so you decided to have his neck for dessert."
Kate's blush deepened. "Guess I was hungry for more than just grapes and sandwiches," she replied.
Sarah burst into unbridled laughter, uncontrollable and very infectious, while Kate bit her knuckle to keep back her own giggles. "Ohhhh," Sarah groaned at last. "I gotta go..."
"Serves you right for harassing me..." Kate snorted.
"Oh, but you make it so easy."
Kate stuck out her tongue at the phone in spite of the fact that there was no way Sarah could see her. "Just for that, I'm not telling you about the way he looked at me after I got out of my shower and walked by him wearing nothing but a bathrobe."
"You don't need to," Sarah retorted. "My imagination works just fine."
Kate snickered, shaking her head at her best friend. "I'm sure of that."
"How'd your date go last night?"
Closing her eyes, Kate heaved a great sigh and twirled like a ballerina... a very awkward ballerina, as she lost her balance and fell onto the bed with a great flop. "Sarah... I am sooo much in love with him..."
"Well, that much is obvious," Sarah drawled. "You going to tell me about it?"
"You going to stop me?" Kate retorted. When Sarah snickered once, Kate began. "I wore the dress that Andrew and Holly brought back for me from their honeymoon."
Sarah let out a slight cry of surprise. "The Hawaiian sundress? Kate... You were trying to knock his socks off, weren't you?"
"Oh, yeah. I got a lot of stares last night," Kate admitted, "and only half of them came from Clay."
"I told you," Sarah said quietly, "that you can be sexy when you want to be. He like?"
"He like."
Sarah snickered. "Big surprise. He look good too?"
"Oh yeah..." Kate purred. "He looked very good..."
"Good enough to nibble on for a while?" Sarah teased.
Immediately Kate knew what Sarah was suggesting. "Not this time, I didn't."
"Aww..."
Kate raised a mischievous eyebrow. "Although he did suggest that I should give him a matching one on the other side..."
Sarah giggled with a loud whoop. "Go for it, Katydid! Sounds like an invitation to me."
Kate ignored her and told about the evening at the restaurant, starting with the corsage and the conversations at the dinner table and continuing through their time spent dancing and laughing at the bodyguards' mischief.
"They did what??" Sarah asked, giggling helplessly. "Oh my gosh... I'm looking forward to meeting these two characters."
"You'll meet Will at Christmas," Kate informed her, "but you'll have to wait for another time to meet Jerome. Jerome's spending Christmas with his own family."
"That says a mouthful for Will," Sarah noted, "that he's ready to sacrifice his own break for a job."
"It could say any number of things about him," Kate agreed. "But I think it speaks positive things about both Will and Clay, that there's that kind of loyalty and sacrifice." She smiled. "Will doesn't know it yet, but Clay told me privately that he's going to pay Will extra for the holiday."
"That," Sarah said, "tells me that Will's not doing it for the money. Thanks for that little insight." Sarah paused for a moment. "I can tell you two enjoyed your evening of dinner and dancing... but knowing you two it didn't end there. Tell me about the rest of your evening, and there had better be at least one declaration of love between you in there somewhere."
Kate blushed brilliantly. Between Sarah and now Kim Locke, she had a knack at making friends who almost always nailed the point squarely on the head. "Clay put on some music," she said quietly, "and we danced some more."
"You guys are sweet." Sarah sighed. "It was your last night, Katydid. There had to be more."
Nodding slowly, Kate continued. "It was just slow dancing close and sweet for a while... until I kissed him on the cheek." Kate raised a reflective eyebrow. "Then sweet turned into steamy... and close turned into closer..."
"And dancing," Sarah purred, "turned into kissing..."
"Passionate kissing..." Kate admitted.
"Oh my..."
"It didn't last long enough for us to get in trouble though," Kate shook her head. "Somehow in the middle of all this I had a bit of a flashback."
Sarah gasped. "Oh no! What happened? Are you all right?"
Kate nodded, forgetting for a moment that Sarah couldn't see her. "I'm fine now. Clay figured out really fast that something had freaked me out, and once I explained he understood. Like the beautiful man he is, he just held me... but I was still too freaked out, and I kind of babbled stupidly for a while."
"Babbled?" Sarah questioned. "Kate, if something reminded you of that in all this, then you were scared. People aren't always coherent when they're scared." She sighed softly, and Kate could hear the sympathy in that sigh. "Tell me what happened next."
"Like I said, I babbled stupidly for a while... although what I said about how amazing and wonderful Clay is would be something I'd say when I was calm and rational, I became a motormouth. Talked frank and fast..."
Sarah made gentle tsking noises. "Katydid, be careful when you get like that. One of these days when you're in your motormouth phase, you're going to say the first thing that comes to mind and it will be something that you're going to regret."
"Sarah," Kate breathed, "I told him that I loved him."
Sarah hummed thoughtfully. "Then again, there are times babbling has its benefits. How did he respond to that?"
Kate smiled gently and warmly at the memory. "By telling me that he loved me," she said quietly. When Sarah sighed with satisfaction, Kate continued. "He also told me that if he thought I would have been ready for the commitment and willing to say yes, he would have proposed."
A long silence hung in the air before Sarah spoke again. "Wow. He already wants to marry you."
"Yes. He told me he would have married me last night if he could have."
Sarah responded immediately. "You wouldn't have been ready for that."
"I wasn't ready for a proposal period," Kate affirmed, "and he knew that. That's why he didn't propose last night. But the way he was talking... he's still planning to propose, sometime in the near or semi-distant future."
"Oh my goodness... Kate," Sarah breathed, "you two couldn't be any more right for each other. And anyone who knows you can see you are both completely head over heels in love. I think it's only going to be a matter of time before he proposes... and before the two of you exchange vows. And Kate - don't wait too long to exchange those vows."
"I'll agree with that," Kate nodded. "But how long it'll be until then... we'll wait and see."

Later out in the kitchen
Kate joined Clay and Kim at the breakfast table, noting that Clay had showered and changed in her absence. "Good morning, again."
"Good morning, Kate," Kim smiled.
The three clasped hands for the mealtime prayer, which was done at their house regardless of whom was at the table. This morning, however, it was Kim who started. "Heavenly Father, thank you for the start of another beautiful day. We also thank you for yesterday's rain, even if it did interrupt Clay and Kate's hike. You've given the two of them an amazing week together to get to know each other more, which we recognize as your special gift to them as they have drawn closer in a love that honors and praises you. We ask you give safe travel to Kate as she flies back to her home in Nebraska. Help her to make all her flights and to arrive home in good health and spirits. In your name."
Kate took a deep breath and a moment to think before she started her portion of the prayer. Although she prayed on a fairly regular basis, her praying style was laid-back and informal - it sounded less like a prayer and more like a conversation. It worked just fine for her in her private time with God (she hadn't heard Him complain yet) but drove her crazy when she had to pray aloud with others. "Lord, thank you for the amazing week you've given me out here in California. You've given me the opportunity to meet and make friends with some very special people, and I thank you for that opportunity and that gift. And I want to give you a special thanks for the time I've had to get to know Clay better. You've heard me say many times what a special gift he is to so many people, and even more how he is to me. You have blessed me so much more than I could ever deserve, to have the love and friendship of this incredible man. Thank you for the success so far of the movie he and Ruben made. Continue to give him the opportunity to bless others and to be a positive witness to you and your love. Bless him mightily, Lord, so that he may bless many."
Touched by the way Kate had prayed for and about him, Clay squeezed her hand. He began his segment of the prayer with a slight hoarseness that cleared as he prayed on. "Father God, your love never ceases to amaze me... how you could give up your Son for someone like me... how you love us with an everlasting love. The sacrifice you made, the sacrifice your Son made, is something that we can only begin to understand while we are here on this earth. And we can only begin to understand the depth of your love. I thank you for your amazing love, that you have shared this beautiful, godly woman with me, and that you have brought her into my life to encourage and support me. I could never thank you enough for that, even if I thanked you every day. I also ask that you give her safe travel back home to her family and friends there, back to her church and her classroom. Help her to share her love for you and your love for her there in her hometown, whether it be in the classroom or out on her own. Help her to heal from this... traumatic incident that happened so many years ago. If it be your will, help her use her own experience to help her minister and relate to others with similar situations. Bless this food we are about to eat. May it nourish us in the days ahead. In your name we pray, Amen."
When they were finished praying, the three immediately started passing the food around until everyone's plates were filled. Kim glanced between Clay and Kate, noting that in spite of the fact that their hands were closely intertwined both of them ate in thoughtful silence. She shook her head with amazement. These two have it bad. Kim leaned on her hand, giving each of them a glance. "Don't everyone talk at once."
"Hunh?" Kate asked, startled from her reverie.
"The two of you," Kim explained, "are going to mope enough once you leave. Why don't you talk now, while you're still together to enjoy each other's company?"
Kate gave a weak smile. She had been remembering the rest of her phone conversation with Sarah, who had went on to tell her what had happened in her absence... what had gone on around town and church, what had come in the mail, and who had called to leave messages for Kate.
"There's just the usual in the mail..." Sarah said, shuffling through papers as she talked with her roommate, "a couple of bills and a handful of advertisements..."
"Oh, joy..."
Sarah seemed to sympathize. "I know. The only time the mail has anything interesting is around birthdays and Christmas... unless there's something from Clay."
"Which there won't be," Kate said simply, "because I'm here with him..."
"At least your phone calls were more interesting. Principal Elliott called yesterday," Sarah told her. "He's already asking for your lesson plans for your first quarter's worth of classes."
Kate heaved a heavy sigh - with the invention of things like answering machines and cell phones and email, it seemed that vacations weren't the chances to escape it all like they used to be. "Already?" Kate grumbled. "Did you tell him I was out of state?"
"Of course I did, dearie, but you know him."
"Yeah, I do." Kate frowned with annoyance. "Minor details like that are irrelevant to that man."
"Yep. And his wife had even seen you on Regis and Kelly." Sarah heaved an impatient sigh. "I assured him that you were on top of things as always and promised that I would pass on the message."
"Thanks, sweetie," Kate smiled. "I owe you one."
"I'll put it on your tab," Sarah said, and both women knew that meant it would be added to the list of things one supposedly owed the other... but that neither really kept track of in the end. "Speaking of owe, Pastor Sullivan insists that once more he is forever in your debt."
"What'd I do now?" Kate protested.
"Vacation Bible school," Sarah reminded her.
Kate shrugged. "So I taught a week of VBS. Big deal."
"It's a big deal to him. He claims that they were even more short-handed this year than last year."
"It's not like there was NOBODY else he could have asked to teach that class," Kate made a sour face.
"Not according to Pastor Sullivan," Sarah disagreed. "He told me he talked to a half dozen other people before he recruited you."
"I was off work and bored," Kate shrugged again. "There's only so much of writing new lesson plans a person can take before they'll go stir-crazy. Besides, a change of subject matter is always fun."
"Katydid," Sarah chided. "Just allow the man to feel grateful and someday return you a favor."
Kate snorted. "I guess..."
"And your favorite church grandmas," Sarah said with a giggle, "are practically planning your wedding already."
"You have got to be kidding," Kate groaned.
"They told me that it was about time you found yourself a nice young man," Sarah quoted, "and asked when you would be bringing him to church so they could meet him in order to give you their approval."
Kate slapped her forehead. "Now that's just what we needed..."
Sarah giggled. "I saved you the trouble of telling them yourself and told them that Clay was a very busy man who traveled a lot, and we weren't sure when they would get to meet him."
With a confused blink, Kate frowned. "But they know we're dating, which means they probably saw Regis and Kelly, which means they probably heard us talk about Christmas..."
"Eh," Sarah said, and Kate could imagine her shrugging. "They don't seem to know. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth."
"Believe me, I won't," Kate drawled. "Anything else, madam secretary?"
Sarah snorted. "I think the rest of it can wait until you get home."
Kate sighed. As Jerome had suggested back at the beginning of this trip, this was probably going to be the only thing that resembled a vacation until Christmas... and Kate had done her best to leave her work back in Nebraska, enjoying each minute as it was until she returned. That is, until today's phone conversation with Sarah. Just one more reminder that I'm returning to my own solitary life, exactly as I left it. Truth be told, there was a significant part of her who wanted to stay here with Clay - or take him with her. "Sorry. I guess I was kind of distracted."
"You weren't the only one," Kim told her, waiting for Clay to respond as well.
Suddenly Clay's head jerked up as he realized both women were looking at him. He absentmindedly caressed Kate's hand as he blinked at Kim. "I'm sorry, did you say something?"
Kim let her head fall into her open hand. "Never mind."

On the way into the LAX airport campus
Silence hung in the air of the limo as Clay and Kate held tightly onto one another. The driver concentrated on getting to where he needed to be, and the bodyguards knew better than to disturb the somber couple. Knowing that Kate's return journey was just ahead of her, the two of them had hardly left each other's side for anything more than a minute once breakfast ended.
Finally Jerome turned around in his seat. "We're here. Better say goodbye, man."
Clay's jaw trembled, and he bit his lip. "I'm going in with her."
"What??" Will asked, whirling around to face Clay with a frown that matched Jerome's.
"You heard me," Clay said quietly. "I'm going in with her."
The two men knew that nothing they said was going to convince him to remain here in the car. For the most part Clay was very flexible, but if he believed in something or was determined to do a given thing then there was very little that would change his mind. "You're crazy..." Will scowled.
Clay nodded and kissed the back of Kate's hand. "Crazy about my Kate..." he admitted.
Jerome and Will got out of the car first, pulling the luggage out of the trunk and having it nearby before opening the door for Clay and Kate. Jerome gave Kate a sly grin. "Try not to fall this time."
Kate smiled gently as Clay assisted her out of the car before following close behind. "I won't."
With a bodyguard on each side, Clay and Kate entered the terminal and went to check in. Clay gently kneaded her shoulders in silence as he carefully avoided paying too much attention to the check-in procedures. Everything went according to routine, and within moments Kate's luggage slid down the loading belt. At last it disappeared from sight, and Clay's heart ached a little more at its absence. Kate turned to him and smiled, but it was clear from her misty eyes that her own heart was breaking too. Taking her hand, Clay laced his fingers between hers and slowly started the walk through the LAX terminal towards the security gates.
About fifteen yards from the gate Clay stopped in his tracks. Without a word Clay took Kate into his arms, stroking her hair as they held each other tight. The tears that he had managed to hold back until this point finally started rolling down his cheeks. He felt Kate shake in his arms, heard a weak sniffle, and knew that she was crying too. I don't want to let her go, Clay protested in his mind. I want to hold onto her until eternity itself runs out and finds us still standing here.
"Dude..." Jerome whispered sympathetically after several minutes, "you'd better say good-bye. The plane will be boarding in about ten minutes, and she still has to get to her gate."
Clay bit his lip, almost choking on his emotions as he pulled back from the embrace to take her face in his hand. "I don't want to say good-bye," he breathed, caressing her face and wiping the tears away.
"Neither do I," Kate sobbed weakly as more tears fell to replace the first.
Taking her face in both hands, Clay kissed her... gently at first, then with growing emotion as his heart turned itself inside out.
"Clay man," Will mumbled, "this is a public airport..."
Reluctantly Clay ended the kiss. Kate hiccuped another sob as she reached up to touch his face. "I love you so much," she said hoarsely as she ran her thumb over his lips.
"I love you so much it hurts," Clay told her, "hurts to let you go."
Kate kissed him again, a deep, hungry kiss that Clay felt all the way to his shoes. "I don't want to go," she mouthed before she kissed him again. Overcome by his emotions, Clay wrapped his arms around her and pulled her closer.
"Oh, good grief..." Will groaned, looking away from the couple.
"Clay..." Jerome growled.
Pulling herself abruptly from his arms with a heart-wrenching sob, Kate deliberately turned her back on Clay as she walked over to take her carry-on from Will. I don't know if I can do this, Clay thought as he closed his eyes, touching his kiss-swollen lips with his fingertips. Kate's footsteps slowly grew farther away, and once more Clay's heart threatened to rip itself in two. Slowly he turned to walk away.
All at once Kate ran back up to him, and he opened his eyes in surprise. Taking his face in her slender hands, she planted one last emotional kiss on his lips before breaking away and running back towards the security gate.
Clay watched as she went through the security gate, scrubbing the tears away from her cheeks as they scanned her bag. He watched as she walked through and collected her bag, turning back to him with sad eyes. She blew him a gentle kiss, and he blew her one in return. Slowly she turned back around and started to walk down the hallway. Finally Clay couldn't take it any more. "I love you, Kate Kirche," he called out.
