  •  There are two species of wildebeest.
  •  Wildebeest are also called gnu, mammal,a large African antelope with an ox-like head, horns, and shoulders; bristly facial hair and mane; and a horse-like tail.
  •  Wildebeests are gregarious, and herds numbering tens of thousands may be seen in East Africa during the dry season, when they make migrations of as much as 1600km (1000 miles) in search of water and grazing.
  •  Females bear single calves, which can run a few minutes after birth. The young are frequently killed by hyenas, and the adults are a favourite prey of lions.
