WHERE-WHO-WHAT?

Arkansas is located in the south, bounded by Texas and and Oklahoma on the west, Missouri on the north, and on the east by the Mississippi River, which separates it from Tennessee and Mississippi and on the south by Louisianna.

The state is small and the natives are friendly! Almost 60% of the population was born in the state, which is mostly rural and agricultural. Lots of trees...65% of the state is forestland...and it's not moonshine and varmit hides either! Dillard's, Aromatique, TCBY and Wal-Mart started in Arkansas, Spring is tornado season and the state had the greatest earthquake in North America, the New Madrid Quake of 1811-1812.

The Ozark Mountains, rising to a height of 2,560 feet in Arkansas' Boston Mountains, represent the largest area of highlands between the Appalachians and the Rockies. These rolling hills and low mountains offer rugged terrain, eroded by water from springs and rivers flowing on a journey to the Mississippi River.

Sparsely populated, the Ozark region is unknown to many people, conjuring up scenes of pioneer cabins among the vast hardwood tree cover, where life takes on a slower pace. It is indeed a place where you can get glimpses of an earlier way of life, but it also holds many beautiful, scenic
discoveries within its rolling landscape.

The 48 state parks provide some of Arkansas' best experiences....mountaintop cabins with cloud -capped lodges....lakeshore cabins with cozy fireplaces..... riverside campsites along the famous White River.....and island retreat with full resort amenities including golf.. a museum village re-creating life in frontier Arkansas... a diamond mine where you'll search for "finders keepers" gems at a one-of-a-kind state park! You'll enjoy your adventures!

How did Arkansas get its name?

From the Quapaw Indians, who were called Akansea by certain other tribes. The name means "South Wind." The spelling comes from early French usage and the precedent set by the Arkansas Gazette. The pronunciation was determined by the General Assembly of 1881 after scholarly investigation.

What do the names "Ozark" and Ouachita mean?

The word comes from the French "aux arcs" but the meaning is uncertain. It could have meant "of the Arkansas" or "from among the Arkansas"; "with bows," referring to Indians; or the curves and bends of the rivers. Ouachita was the name of an Indian tribe in what is now Louisiana.

How did Little Rock get its name?

From a stone outcropping on the bank of the Arkansas River which was a landmark to early travelers. A cliff called "Big Rock" was located upstream.

Who was "Hanging Judge Parker"?

Judge Isaac C. Parker presided over the U.S. district court at Fort Smith from 1875-1896. His court hanged 88 criminals and brought in almost 9,500 convictions.
