Cosma, our favorite fawn runner hen, is getting broody-isn't she the cutest thing you ever saw?

Spring is in the air, a time of joy and rebirth. Here at Big Al's, the diving ducks have departed to more northern climes, the geese are returning, and the resident mallards are beginning their courtship rituals. Cosma and Hyacinth are getting broody, and have been laying eggs all over the yard. Time to build another nesting box!

A duck nesting box should be about a foot square, with good ventilation, some small drainage holes in the base, and a removable top for cleaning. This double box was built with scraps rescued from the trash. The skylights (or picture windows) on left will go in later!

Spring Arrivals!

Here are some photos of our latest addition to the family.

Hiawatha, Houdini, and a few relatives get cozy in their new digs

We adopted Velvet after her mother was ambushed by a marauding seagull.

Never let your duck get near the salad-or into the dip!
