The Taeniolatus was described by Dr. Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1935 as Haplochromis Taeniolatus. In 1989 it was changed to Protomelas Genus by Trewavas and Eccles. Taeniolatus is reffered to the black stripes, the Lattin word meaning small stripes. They stay near the sediment free rocky reefs of the lake and are commonly found. In each area the male has slightly different coloration from the male on adjacent reef. They feed on vegetation to invertebrates, in the aquarium they eat anything. Breeding: they find a flat rock to breed on in the open.( I have found with experiance from raising them that my male has bred with my female peacocks even when I have had female Taenioilatus, I have no answere for this except that there in an aquarium not alot of space even with a 6' tank, and in the lake there is alot of space.) The female carries the eggs and fry for about 3 weeks. Trade Names: Haplochromis Steveni, Haplochromis Hindri,Haplochromis Boadzulu,Haplochromis Red Empress,Haplochromis Fire Blue Size: males 5" sometimes to 8", females the same. The Pictures below are males of different colors of Taeniolatus that have been found and I only have a few of them right now. |
