MY LITTLE DANCING PARTNER

1979 - 1997

Gypsy was with me for 18 years and for the life of me I don't know how to do credit to her. Everytime I try to write this I seem to have a mental block. I can't seem to sum up all of her wonderful qualities. Gyps was my little lover girl. She would jump on my lap, lay flat against my chest with her little back legs sprawled straight out in back of her. Her little paws would be on my shoulders and she would kiss me. I don't mean the normal lick. Gyps had a way of kissing me with the tip of her tongue. It was such a gentle little kiss like she was afraid she would hurt me.
She was also my dancing partner. If she was in the kitchen and I turned the music on in the living room I knew she would be there in an instant standing on her hind legs for me to take her paws and dance with her. She never failed. After a few little steps I would pick her up and we would dance around to both slow and fast music. Again, her little paws would be wrapped around my shoulders.
Gypsy made it a wonderful experience to get up every morning. She would lay on her back wiggling around to get my attention. She knew it was time for me to start rubbing her tummy. She would get so excited and the covers would be flying every which way. By the time we were done playing we were both ready to go back to bed.
My Gypsy was one of a kind. She wasn't a Pure Bred but she was to me. She was a little 7 lb. Cockapoo. She had long black wavy hair that felt like satin. It was so soft and silky. And her eyes were so big and brown and expressive. I miss her so very much and I always will.

FRIEND TO FRIEND
You're giving me a special gift so sorrowfully endowed.
And through these last few cherished days, your courage makes me proud.
But really, love is knowing when your best friend is in pain,
And understanding earthly acts will only be in vain.
So looking deep into your eyes, beyond, into your soul,
I see in you the magic that will once more make me whole.
The strength that you possess is why I look to you today.
To do this thing that must be done, for it's the only way.
That strength is why I've followed you and chose you as my friend.
And why I've loved you all these years...My partner 'til the end.
Please understand just what this gift you're giving means to me.
It gives me back the strength I've lost, and all my dignity.
You take a stand on my behalf, For that is what friends do.
And know that what you do is right for I believe it too.
So one last time I breathe your scent, and through your hand I feel
the courage that's within you, to now grant me this appeal.
Cut the leash that holds me here, Dear friend, and let me run,
once more a strong and steady dog, my pain and struggle done.
And don't despair my passing, for I won't be far away.
Forever here, within your heart and memory I'll stay.
I'll be there watching over you, Your ever faithful friend,
And in your memories I'll run...a young dog once again.

HER LONG SLEEP
She wagged her tail to the very last
And she smiles in her last, long sleep;
The troubles of life, for her, are past!
A shrine in my heart I'll keep.
Her soul---for I feel that she had a soul
And she thought real thoughts, I know---
Has found the ultimate end, life's goal,
In the heaven where good dogs go.
She has lived with me and suffered with me
Shed tears, in her dog like way;
She has placed her paw at times on my knee,
    In a vain attempt to say;
"God never gave us that wondrous power,
To tell all the things we feel,
But, I want to say, in my canine way,
          That my sympathy is real."
So I loved my dog to the very end,
And she in our daily walk,
Was never just dog, but a constant friend
And we had no need to talk.
And I hope, when the summons comes, for me
To embark on the unknown tide,
I shall find her eyes in the Paradise
They say is the other side.

I AM NOT THERE

Do not stand at my grave and weep,

I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn's rain...
When you awaken in morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft star that shines at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there...I did not die!
