    Who we are
P.A.W.S (Pets Are Worth Saving) is a 501 (c)3, non-profit organization based in Effingham County, Ga with volunteers throughout the Coastal Empire. PAWS is dedicated to saving animals and ensuring that they have a loving, healthy, happy place to live. PAWS screens potential owners before allowing any of our wonderful animals to be adopted. Only
responsible owners will be considered. This ensures that the right match is being made for both the potential owner and the animal! There are numerous dogs and cats available for adoption through PAWS right now. Many of them can be seen at Petsmart on Abercorn St (204) in Savannah on Saturday afternoons from 4pm to 8pm. But, if you can't find exactly the type of dog or cat that you are looking for, be sure to ask one of the members of PAWS. Your name can be placed in our directory and when that type of dog or cat is found, you will be notified. This is also a great way to be sure that you are getting the best pet that is suited for both you and for your lifestyle.

    What we do
PAWS has currently placed over 1,500 pets in the last 4 years which is over a pet a day! As proud as we are of these numbers, there is still more to be done! We take cats and dogs that are either strays or in local pounds and animal shelters and put them through our program. These wonderful pets are given a second chance at life thanks to the kind and caring volunteers of PAWS. The animals are then given all necessary shots according to their age group and are also given complete physicals. If they test positive for heartworms, the animal immediately goes through the heartworm treatment which can last about 6 weeks. PAWS also offers spaying and neutering through their program for a reduced fee. The cost of adopting a dog or cat from PAWS covers all these medical expenses. If an animal were adopted through a shelter, these costs on the outside could easily add up to over $250 for adoption, shots and neutering/ spaying. But, through PAWS, the fee for adopting a dog is only $110 for the whole package. Cats can be adopted for only $90. That's a small price to pay for unconditional love!
The adoption option is the greatest thing you can do to help save a life. By buying a pet, you are only supporting the retail business of selling lives rather than saving the unwanted lives that currently exist in numerous shelters and pounds across America. Read here why it hurts when you buy a puppy from a pet store or breeder.

Read what the Humane Society of the United States has to say about the benefits of adopting an animal:

"Unlike buying, adoption usually focuses on matching the adopter's lifestyle and habits with the animal's needs and characteristics. When an animal is sold, profit comes first. Most pet stores will sell an animal to almost anyone. A young puppy may be sold to someone who may not have the time to take care of her. The profit motive only puts the animal's interests in jeopardy." -HSUS (Humane Society of the United States)

    The Benefits
The benefits of adopting through PAWS are amazing! These pets have already been in a loving home and are accustomed to living with a family. Many foster families have children or other pets that this animal will be able to socialize with. This benefit ensures the adopting family that the animal can easily deal with the circumstances of being in a new environment. The foster family can also explain the personality of the animal to the future owners making it easier to successfully match people and animals together.

    How You Can Help PAWS

PAWS is always looking for other families willing to foster an animal until it is adopted. This is a great way for someone to contribute to saving the life of a loving animal. There are currently more pets than foster parents which makes it hard for PAWS to take new animals in through their program. Many foster families are caring for over 5 animals and some more than 10 animals at a time! These dedicated fosters could really use your help. If just one family were able to take a pet into their home as a foster, that would mean that another animal could be taken out of the pound or a stray could be taken in to later be adopted. If you think you are able to foster a pet, please contact one of the members of PAWS. You must have some previous experience with animals and a BIG heart.

OR- if you are unable to foster a pet but would like to help PAWS in another way, there are many jobs that can still be done. PAWS is always looking for people with office skills to take care of clerical work as well as people willing to make contact with prospective adoptive parents or assist with fundraisers. PAWS also could use any monetary donations or donations of pet food, old towels, blankets, collars, leashes, water bowls and any office supplies, too! Visit our wish list to find out what we need most! You can also shop at any of our affiliate programs listed on this website. The profits earned through these sites go directly to helping the animals! As was mentioned before, this is a non-profit organization that can use all the help it can get! So, please volunteer in any way that you are able and it will be greatly appreciated! The experience will change your life! For more ideas on helping PAWS, please visit our 100 Tips page!!!

Please Spay or Neuter Your Pet
If you will spay or neuter just one cat or dog during the month of April 2002, you will have prevented the needless suffering of not only the 2 or 3 litters that the animal could produce this year, but up to 67,000 dogs and up to 420,000 cats that this year's litters and their offspring could produce in this and surrounding counties over the next 6-7 years! Your help in fixing just one animal - male or female - will have an enormous impact!!! If you have any doubt, just visit the pounds in our area and see the heartbreak first hand.
For more information regarding the myths of spaying or neutering your pet, please visit our
