A Sheltie is a small, alert, rough coated , working dog resembling the ideal Collie in miniature. They originated in the Shetland Islands and were bred as herding dogs. Their small size, 13-16 inches at the shoulder, enabled them to cross and turn a herd of sheep by running across their backs. They also were just the right size to herd the Shetland ponies and cattle. Shelties excel in obedience, herding and even tracking since they love to please their master. They're very hardy and adaptable, doing well living indoors or out. Colors can be blue merle, tri-color or bi-color in addition to the Lassie shades of sable.
