Elephants not yet protected by Congress.
The bill introduced in Congress last year to protect elephants and people by banning elephants from circuses died in committee after impassioned arguments by elephant handlers, circus P.R. reps, and animal lovers, such as Bob Barker. The bill could be re-introduced: click here to read the letter in support of the original bill. Write to your Senator or Representative and tell her that you want to see animals protected!(1/14/01)

Funding Boost for Animal Welfare Act
: {info courtesy of The Humane Society of the United States}Thanks to the hard work of animal lovers throughout the US, the House and Senate Appropriations Committees approved a $2 million increase for USDA’s Animal Care inspections program for FY 2001 (bringing its budget up to $12 million). This is a good start toward improving conditions for animals at more than 10,000 sites across the country, including labs, puppy mills,
zoos, circuses, & airlines. But more is needed, so this will be an ongoing effort. Final approval of the funding by the full House & Senate is expected before the start of the next fiscal year on October 1st. Nine Senators & 78 Representatives lent their support to this cause, through letters to the Appropriations Committees. (5/18/00)

Mandatory Spay & Neuter
: Apparently the Los Angeles City Animal Control has passed an ordinance which will make spaying and neutering mandatory for all cats and dogs in Los Angeles City. The license for an unaltered dog will cost more than quadruple what it now costs. Similar programs have been effective in reducing the number of stray and homeless animals in other cities such as San Mateo. Hopefully this ordinance will have the same positive effect for L.A. (4/10/00)
- Pepsi Bloodbath
: According to Best Friends magazine, PepsiCo has agreed to remove its advertisements from the bullfighting rings in Mexico and Latin America. The Pepsi representative said that this decision was a direct result of the thousands of letters that they received protesting Pepsi's endorsement of blood sports and the persistent actions of animal welfare groups. Click here to visit "Pepsi Bloodbath" for more information on this topic, or here to view the letter I sent to Pepsi.
- Cockfighting ban
: Thanks in large part to efforts by animal lovers like you, the Senate Agriculture Committee passed Senate Bill 345 on March 2nd by voice vote. S. 345, introduced by Senator Wayne Allard (R-CO), would prohibit interstate transport of birds for cockfighting, closing a loophole left in the Animal Welfare Act since 1976 (cockfighting is the brutal practice of affixing razor-sharp blades to roosters’ legs and forcing them to fight to the death). This good news signals the beginning of the next phase of the battle to get this bill enacted. The timing for action by the full Senate and House is unknown, but everyone must work NOW to keep the momentum going. Click here for more info on how you can help.
- Crush videos
: H.R. 1887 to ban crush videos passed in the House by a landslide vote of 372 to 42 and in the Senate on a voice vote by unanimous consent; it was signed into law by President Bill Clinton on Dec. 9, 1999. Representative Elton Gallegly sponsored the bill.
- Animals in Law Enforcement
: H.R. 1791 will establish strict penalties for harming dogs and horses used in federal law enforcement. The House passed the bill and it is awaiting approval by the Senate.
