Breeder Referral
If you would like to purchase a puppy from a responsible breeder,
please view our membership list for contact
information. If you do not see a breed you are interested in, the
American Kennel Club website maintains a list of national breed club
contact information -- you can find more information
here.
Key Benefits
- Breeding stock owned by responsible breeders are screened for the major
health problems in that specific breed.
- Puppies are sold with a health guarantee if he/she does develop a genetic
problem specific to that breed.
- A responsible breeder will help you pick the right puppy for you.
He/she knows and understands the history of the breed, activity level,
maintenance requirements. If the breeder feels your lifestyle would
not meet the requirements of their breed, he/she will refer you to another
breed/breeder.
- A responsible breeder will question a potential buyer extensively to be
sure he/she/they are ready for the lifetime commitment of owning an
animal. Remember -- to most breeders, these animals are
"children" -- and they will want to be sure their
"children" are going to good homes.
- Puppies will have at least 1 (sometimes 2 or 3) rounds of shots, at
least one worming, and will be started on heartworm prevention before they go home.
- Puppies are well-socialized, both with humans and other dogs.
- Pet quality puppies are sold on limited registrations and/or spay/neuter
contracts to prevent and limit any unwanted, unplanned, or unexpected
breeding, and to limit registration of puppies from such litters.
- A responsible breeder provides support, referral, and assistance to puppy
buyers for the lifetime of the animal; often beyond.
- A responsible breeder usually belongs to a local and/or national club,
such as breed specialty, all-breed, and/or performance club.
