Grooming Your Chihuahua
The Long and the Short of It
Whether long or short coated, your Chihuahua
will need a short grooming session once or twice a week in order to keep its
coat gleaming. Many dogs and owners look forward to such grooming sessions as a
relaxing time of bonding. With a short coat, you can use a natural bristle brush
to distribute the oils, a rubber bristle brush to remove dead hair, and a flea
comb to remove fleas or fine debris.
With a long coat, you will also want to
use a pin brush or a wide-tooth comb. You may discover some matting behind the
ears or behind the elbows. Because the Chihuahua does not have a very thick
undercoat, matting is seldom a problem, but mats are more likely to occur during
shedding season or when the hair is oily or dirty. Try to split a mat with your
fingers, starting near the skin and pulling it in half longitudinally. Hold the
hair between the mat and your dog's skin to avoid painful pulling.
Coat disasters such as stuck on chewing
gum can be remedied by first applying ice, pine tar can be loosened with hair
spray, and other tar can be worked out with vegetable oil followed by
dishwashing detergent. Cornstarch can brighten and fluff a drab, oily coat. Use
a soft toothbrush to work on stains. Avoid eye stains by diligent use of an eye
stain preventive. Use mineral oil or an ear cleanser to loosen debris in the
ear.
