Thinking of adding a tree to your landscape? What a great idea!
Trees have many benefits; here are just some of them.
Environmental
Trees clean the air-removing dust, ozone, sulfur dioxide and other pollutants
They reduce danger of flooding by absorbing rainfall
Reduce soil erosion
Provide habitat for birds and small wildlife
Add oxygen to the air
Economic
When planted correctly, they reduce heating bills by acting as wind breaks and reduce cooling bills by shading
Increase property values- homes with treed lots have 6-12% higher appraised value.
Provide foods such as fruits and nuts
Personal
They provide a sound barrier to decrease urban noise
Soften harsh contours of buildings
Provide privacy
Cool cities. A single tree can have the cooling effect of 10 air conditioners
But the best tree is a well planned tree. Before you plant, consider these questions.
What is important to you?
Do you want a tree that will bear fruit, a flowering tree just for show, or a tree for shade? Some trees tend to drop seeds or nuts that may be annoying to you. Some trees tend to attract certain bugs or release pollen or leak sap. Make sure you know the habits of the type of tree you are considering.
Where will you plant the tree?
Know how big the tree will be at maturity and make sure it is not planted too close to houses, overhead wires, or underground utilities.
If you want a tree in a particular space but don’t have unlimited growth room, consider a tree that doesn’t get too big.
Will the tree’s position provide shade in hot months or a wind break in winter
months?
Is it a tree appropriate for your geographical area?
You don’t want to spend money on a tree that can’t tolerate your extreme temperatures. Ask your county extension or local nursery for names of appropriate trees for your growing area.
So, you’ve found just the right place for the right tree and now your ready to plant!
