We made it to Yellowstone!
West Thumb Geyser Basin on the shore of Yellowstone Lake.
Our first heard of buffalo! We took a ton of pictures. (By the last day, we were like, "Oh, more buffalo.")
A close-up of our buddies. After we took the picture, they started snorting at us, so we took off.
Old Faithful!
In the foreground is Sawmill Geyser, with Castle Geyser in the distance.
This is Morning Glory Pool. These hot pools are so inviting, too bad they're filled with acid!
A herd of elk grazing by the road.
The Lower Geyser Basin where the hot springs flow into the river.
Brightly colored algae grows where the hot water runs across the rocks.
This lake was bright turquoise and mysterious, with steam rising off it.
Between the steaming lakes, brightly colored algae, and dead trees (from the acid steam), it looked like another planet.
The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. I think this is the Upper Falls.
We hiked down a steep stairway in the side of the cliff to see the falls. Back in the early days, tourists climbed down rope ladders!
Here is the falls from another viewpoint.
The canyon was full of pastel shades of yellow, pink, and orange. It didn't really come out in the photo, but it was beautiful.
Here's a coyote running across a field. We saw lots of coyotes on the upper loop. (The roads around Yellowstone make a huge figure 8.)
Mammoth Hot Springs near the north entrance.
Mammoth Hot Springs.
Mammoth Hot Springs.
This herd of elk was grazing almost on the road.
More elk. |
The trees are coming back from the big fires. These were about 10 feet tall already.
We FINALLY spotted some moose grazing in a field at sundown. (We never did see a male with a rack.)
On our last day we spotted these majestic elk bucks.
