TIPS: Choosing a security system
One of your primary concerns should be the reputation of the security company. Things to look for:
  1. Is the company reliable? Will it be around years from now when you need to upgrade or expand?
  2. Are the company's employees professional and experienced? The service force should respond whenever you have a problem. Installers should have pride in their work and be neat and efficient when installing the equipment.
  3. Can the company handle problems over the phone by servicing your system remotely from a computer? This gets the job accomplished without being bothered by a service call.
  4. You should consider the type of equipment the company is using. Make sure they use products from a manufacturer that has a brand name you can trust. Products should meet or exceed industry standards such as an Underwriters Laboratory (UL) listing.
  5. Does the company offer a solid warranty package? If your installation company uses a reputable securty manafacturer then the chances that the equipment will fail are minimal. In the rare occurance that something does go wrong, there will be no hassles in getting a replacement product.
  6. In today's economic times, price may also be a concern. Many companies advertise entry level systems that provide "something is better than nothing" protection. If you are considering a basic system, be prepared to purchase additional items that will customize it. This may mean adding additional burglary protection, fire protection and convenience such as a second or third keypad.

Question:
I always thought only the well-to-do or large bussinesses could afford a security system. Are there good security systems available for the average income person or small business owner?

Answer:
This is a great question -- and it's one we get a lot. Yes, anyone can afford a good security system. While larger systems are more costly, and enhancements can run the cost of the system even higher, the average home or small business security system is not prohibitive in cost.

You do need to know what kind of budget you have to work with before you commit to a system. Some companies sell you the security system and then charge a monthly monitoring fee. Others install the systems for free and have a higher monitoring fee to cover the cost of the system and it's installation. You would be basically renting the system and not owning it.
