Going the Distance, Going for Speed

Doh! My Foot!

In case you're wondering why I suck so bad this year, I've got a whole list of excuses. Foremost among them is my achin' achilles tendon, injured from trying to play ultimate frisbee, volleyball and race cross all at the same time after doing no running since last cross season. I'm happy to say that I think I'm finally over it though, so serious training will now begin. I rode with Napa CX ace Dave Carr at lunchtime the other day, and we did a fair amount of running up the steep hills in Helen Putnam Park, just outside of Petaluma, where we both work. He still dogged me up, but it's exciting to finally be able to run without pain, especially since that's the only thing I really do well most of the time. If you live or work near Petaluma, join us Tuesdays at noonish for a mix of riding and running and squirrelling around the rough stuff on skinny tires.

Believe it or not, we actually finally moved into our house in lovely Forestville. I'm stoked beyond belief, though it's not actually any closer to santa cruz than sacramento was, at least it doesn't suck like sacramento does. If you live in sacramento and you're offended by my dissing of your home, too bad. You'd have to be an idiot to stay there, so be dissed and like it.

I've already started exploring some of the trails and back roads near my house. I can actually reach fun trails now without ever riding on pavement. Unfortunately (for you) it's a pretty much 100% bootleg of private ranch and forest land, so don't expect any tips, maps or directions. I'll just gloat about it a little.

I got email from Dan Norton, cx racer, promoter, national champion, luddite and co-founder of the DFL transvestite racing tradition. He was defending the northwest sissies who are afraid of mtb'ers. I didn't get my rant on the topic done in time, but I promise to print a nice raving rant, in the tradition of VeloSapiens, as well as reprint Dan's letter. Look for it on or about december 1st.

Rants

My search for a decent bikeshop in my new home.

Race News

Obviously, the only real race news is cyclocross, and you can trust my recommendations. I have a short writeup of the first two surf city races. For the '98 cross sched check out the NCNCA Cross page.

Equipment Notes

I just got some Time pedals. I'll tell you what I think, or you can check out the review archive for previous reviews about MTB equipment.

Archives Index (sort of)

It's hard to structure the old information in an easy to find format. This is the old, old homepage of this site, with links to the reviews, results, epic rides, etc..

Back Issues of VS

  • October 1998 . Cross season begins.
  • September 1998 . Late season results, overview of various equipment I liked.
  • July 1998 9 speed sucks. Long-term SID review.
  • June 1998 Why Richard Cunningham is a dork. Why I love my Esp. An 8-hr epic ride in Nevada City

Links That Don't Suck

  • Bikesite/Mudsluts. This e-zine writes too many positive reviews, but other than that it's pretty cool. They have some incredibly talented, good-looking, athletic contributors.
  • Epic ride stories Some of these are insane, but all are worth reading.
  • Precision Bicycles, your source for Fisher
  • Dan Garcia's Webpage He rides fast, so you don't have to
  • Napa Valley Velo Cross Website Your source for good cyclocross information in a less inflammatory format. Provided by Dave Carr
  • Steve Apgar's Napa Valley MTB page has some good off-road riding info for the Napa Valley area.
  • Adventure Sports Online. Good info for all sorts of biking, rafting, hiking etc.. adventures. The new version of the page seems to be much less graphics and bandwidty intensive.
  • Team WrongWay. This is pretty fun reading. These guys are only semi-serious about racing, but they're all the way serious about having fun. Plus they make fun of Steve, always a bonus.
