Spunj Bodyboarding. | |
The bane of all other waveriders is the
bodyboarder's boon. While some may view backwash as an inconvenience at best and ruining
an otherwise good surf at worst, the bodyboarder is presented with lots of cool
opportunities. The flexibility of the bodyboard means that the transition created by the
direct meeting of two oncoming waves can be used to accelerate into some hell airs and
stuff, be it prone, dropknee or stand up. These shots were filmed at the backwash rocks at Coolum. Around the end of summer of one year in three, enough sand is scooped out from around these rocks to provide perfectly formed one to three foot waves - however those waves are travelling out to sea. When the backwash rocks worked, everyone would beg, borrow or steal a sponge and hit it. |

Here's Ben Prior launching off an incoming wave. That's pretty close to a perfect ramp there. Shot six looks like Prior's been spat out of a snowmaking machine. Sorry but this is another big page - please be patient.
This is me going for a launch. See that kid in the first two shots? Neither did I. I landed on the poor grom's head. With enough speed and the right section you could actually air right over people.
Ben Prior - immanent implosion.
Mid air collisions are quite common. There's no drop in rules out there. I ran into Josh while going the air spin. We still got a fair bit of hang time.
Here's Prior boosting dropknee. That's the quickest way to crease your deck, so use an old trashed board. I've seen shredders pull the fully tweaked indy nosebone type DK airs out there. Have a look at Prior's legs in pics 5 & 6. Heh heh heh.
Look how much farther the horizon is above me in shot 3, then compare that with the explosion in shot 5. These two groms were the last people to see me alive.
