Skate Comp
Where:
Browns Plains
(hopefully,
some pics coming soon)
This
was a one off event held by some really nice
people in the Browns Plains area. Being a church run skate comp and concert,
quite a few people had problems with the "No smoking, drinking, etc" but
once everyone forgot about the idiots who didn't want to go along with
that, the day was a general success. The small church building doubled
as the concert stage and respite from the heat of the sun, but all the
main action of the day was outside in the carpark, which was surrounded
with the mobile cyclone fencing usually encountered at the big outdoor
concert events.
The
skate ramps from the Garden
City Christian Church were brought in and set up in a pretty good layout
for the comp and at 2:30pm, people were let in for a measly $2.00 cover
charge that everyone could afford. All the skaters were encouraged to go
in the comp, regardless of age, ability or whatever, but thankfully not
everyone did enter keeping it to reasonable numbers, and a shorter period
of time. Even so, as the day progressed and lots of skaters did their stuff,
even more people arrived and by 3:30pm when the comp started, there was
hardly a spare place to sit surrounding the small enclosed carpark area.
Brett Jacobsen did the mic all day, when he wasn't skating.
There
were many tricks and skaters to note, but
I was skating too much myself to recall many individual names. Going off
the back of the main bank was the cool thing to do, Jay Musk kick fliped
over it and stayed on, but mostly the skaters would just roll off the top,
hit the ground and not go anywhere. Richard T had the most tech tricks,
fakie ollie 50 kickflip out, flip to tail so cleanly over the spine every
time and some big kickflips and one 360 flip to fakie on the quarter ramp.
Everyone went big off the little jump ramp that the juniors were trying
all day.
There
were three sections in the skateboarding comp
and results (and prizes) are as follows:

Once
the skateboard comp was over a lot of people
left, but the roller bladers had a comp too. In their usual indifference
to bodily harm they went at it like there was no tomorrow (one kid broke
his arm/wrist quite well), and soon enough the simple ramps were not enough.
The bank ramp was pushed back from the close carpark area to within a couple
of metres of the cyclone fence, which stood a good metre taller than the
bank and this was the new obstacle to clear. To the likes of Jay
Musk, this was more of a challenge than the
rest of the days proceedings, so in between the roller fools launching
themselves over the fence, he did it too. Yes, he did land one well on
his second attempt, but on the third, something happened mid air and he
ended up popping his knee out of its socket when he hit the ground from
4 metres up. The nice St Johns medics put it back in for him, but the people
organising the event decided it was all getting a little too out of hand
so they turned the ramps over and packed up the carpark.
Most
of the rest of the skaters and other people
left as the ramps did (myself included) so I didn't see the bands or anything
else there. That was more than enough fun for us all for one day.
Lastly,
thank you to the people who put the event
on and all who made it possible with ramps, prizes and anything else that
could not have been done without you. Let's see if we can do the same next
year?
